Hate speech quadrupled, cattle vigilantism doubled in Karnataka in 2020!

Report compiled by local activist shows a huge spike in communal incidents pertaining to hate speech as compared to last year

In a compilation titled A Chronicle of Communal Incidents in Coastal Districts of Karnataka, that presents annual figures based on incidents reported in the local press, activist Suresh B. Bhat has found a four-fold increase in incidents of hate speech, and a doubling of incidents of cattle vigilantism.

Bhat, who is a member of Karnataka Communal Harmony Forum and People’s Union of Civil Liberties (PUCL), Mangaluru has discovered that 47 instances of hate speech were reported in the region in 2020, as opposed to 12 in 2019. The report also finds 25 cases of cattle vigilantism in 2020 as opposed to 11 in 2019. The report also looks into instances of moral policing and allegations of religious conversions.
