The 45-year-old Muslim man who was brutally assaulted and his attackers kept telling him to chant “Jai Shri Ram”, a chant now used as a war cry by Hindutva vigilante groups. The most distressing element of the footage that soon went viral on social media was that of the little girl who clung on to her father, crying and begging for his life. The chant rang out again on Thursday night, as ‘protesters’ reportedly belonging to the Bajrang Dal sat outside the DCP’s office demanding that the accused be released.
The group chanted ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and ‘Vande Matram’ till senior police officers “held talks with the members of the outfit,” stated news reports. The mob reportedly called their “protest” off after that. The accused were identified as Ajay Rajesh “Band waala”, Aman Gupta, and Rahul Kumar and an FIR was lodged against them and 10 unidentified people was lodged under IPC Sections 147 (rioting), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and 506 (criminal intimidation), stated news reports.
