Accused Ashish Mishra arrested on Saturday

Lakhimpur Kheri killings accused Ashish Mishra was arrested on October 9, 2021 evening, confirmed UP police. The son of Minister of State for Home Affairs, Ajay Mishra, Ashish is charged with murder after allegedly driving his Mahindra Thar vehicle over protesting farmers and shooting a farmer to death.

According to DIG Upendra Aggarwal, Mishra was arrested for non-cooperation and evasive replies on Saturday evening.

Nearly a week has passed since the incident where four farmers and a local journalist Raman Kashyap died due to the violence in Tikonia village in Lakhimpur Kheri district, Uttar Pradesh. Ashish’s arrest is part of farmers group Samyukta Kisan Morcha’s (SKM) latest demands calling for the immediate action against all accused.

They argued that people charged with murder are put under immediate arrest. However, Ashish was arrested after his second call for police questioning. Even now, his alleged accomplices Sumit Jaiswal and Ankit Das are yet to be arrested.

Earlier in the day, the SKM announced a series of events to condemn the killing of farmers by the Union Minister’s son. Farmers said the execution of the events depends on whether the government accepts all their demands which includes the arrest of all accused and the dismissal of Ajay Mishra from his ministerial position. They also said that Mishra should also be arrested for spreading disharmony and attempting murder.

During news interviews, Ashish had claimed that farmers had attacked the BJP event armed with swords. In response, many eye witnesses and viral videos show that farmers were unaware of the approaching vehicle let alone armed for conflict.
