Maharashtra and Gujarat together reported over 50 coronavirus-related deaths on Tuesday as the total number of people who passed away in the country due to the infection reached close to 1,000. The two states alone account for almost 60 per cent of all deaths in the country, The Indian Express reported.

Ahmedabad reported 19 deaths on a single day, taking the city’s death count to 129. Twenty-five of the 31 deaths in Maharashtra came from Mumbai. Some of the patients had passed away a few days earlier but their tests were confirmed only on Tuesday. Together Maharashtra and Gujarat now have seen the death of at least 583 people.

On Tuesday, 1905 new infections were discovered, but majority of the cases were reported from a handful of states – Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi and Tamil Nadu, with 1503 of the 1905 cases or almost 79 percent being contributed by them.

Maharashtra reported 722 new cases, while Gujarat, Delhi and Madhya Pradesh reported over 200 cases each. Gujarat recorded 206 Covid-19 cases and 19 deaths in the last 24 hours.

Government data showed that the number of districts in the red zone had reduced from 177 to 129 in the last two weeks, while the number of orange districts had increased from 207 to 250, probably due to the red zone districts falling into the orange zones.

Also, out of the over 22,000 cases, only 80 patients were on ventilator support. Till Sunday, only 2.17 per cent of all infected persons in India were housed in an Intensive Care Unit, 1.29 per cent were on oxygen support, while just 0.36 per cent required ventilator support.

Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on Wednesday, said that the doubling rate had reduced 11.3 days in the country. “Although the global mortality rate is around 7 percent, India is having a mortality rate of around 3 percent and around 86 percent of fatality of persons with co-morbidity,” he said.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said that there was no approved therapy for Covid-19. The ICMR said in a tweet –
