A body of a 42-year-old man was found hanging at the booth office of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Siliguri on Thursday morning.

Locals out on their morning walk had reportedly spotted the body hanging from the booth office and alerted the police which came and took the body away for postmortem.

An investigation is underway.

The deceased has reportedly been identified as Nitya Mandal who used to work as a labourer.

Mandal’s wife Rina said she was unsure if it was suicide or murder. “He had no fight or enmity with anyone, had been unwell. I don’t know if it’s a murder or suicide,” she said, as reported by DNA.

BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain termed the incident as an example of Bengal’s jungle raj and asked the Election Commission to take cognizance of the matter.

“There is jungle raj in Bengal, the Election Commission should take cognizance of this incident. There is no rule of law in Bengal, BJP workers are continuously getting killed there. Is Trinamool Congress a political party or a murderous organisation? This is really unfortunate; the people of Bengal will answer this with their votes. CM Mamata Banerjee thinks she has become the absolute authority in Bengal after becoming CM, the people make the CM and dispose of the CM from the CM seat. The people of Bengal will teach a lesson to Mamata Banerjee in the Lok Sabha election and she will not become the CM post the assembly elections in Bengal,” he said, ANI reported.

“In June 2018, a BJP worker Dulal Kumar was found hanging from a power transmission tower in West Bengal Purulia. The party, as well as the parents of the deceased, had then accused the TMC of having a role in the death of the man. In July 2018, 45-year-old Shaktipada Sardar, the BJP Mandal committee of Mandirbazar-Dhanurhat area in West Bengal’s Diamond Harbour, was hacked to death by miscreants. The BJP claimed that the killing was orchestrated by goons belonging to ruling TMC,” The Statesman reported.

The incident happened a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mega rally in north Bengal’s Siliguri.

West Bengal will see polling in all seven phases of the Lok Sabha elections beginning April 11.

Polling in Siliguri, which falls under Darjeeling Lok Sabha constituency, will be held in the second phase of General Elections, scheduled on April 18.

This comes a day after Prime Minister Modi’s mammoth rally in the town. Calling state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee a “speed breaker”, Modi accused her of hindering a number of central welfare schemes in the state, like Ayushman Bharat, PM-KISAN, and Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act, 2016.
