Minister’s pro-CAA campaign falls flat in her own constituency

Debasree Chaudhuri had visited Raiganj in West Bengal to propagate support for CAA and was met with angry protestors

Debasree Chaudhuri, MP from West Bengal

Debasree Chaudhuri, MP from West Bengal had visited her home state to campaign in support of CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act). The CAA support campaign is a new devise being used by BJP as an answer to anti-CAA protests.

Chaudhuri, MoS, Women and Child Development, was faced with angry protestors in her constituency Raiganj in North Dinajpur district. The protestors were shouting slogans against CAA and demanded that the Act be revoked. When she reached Indira Colony in Raiganj, she started speaking about CAA and party workers were distributing leaflets on CAA. She was then faced with probing questions about CAA. They even asked her what she had done for her constituency after being elected. They also demanded answers on why the BJP was creating panic over people’s citizenship.

After being badgered with questions, mostly from the women residents, she rushed back to her car, which was then surrounded by some 250 odd people demanding answers. “All of us are in panic over this new citizenship act and the NRC. Do you know that people are standing in queues in front of banks and post-offices since midnight to get their Aadhaar cards rectified?” one woman asked. She was faced with “Go back” slogans while she drove away. She cancelled her next visit in the state and left for Delhi.

She claimed that the protest was staged by TMC workers. TMC, however denied its role in this protest and said that locals of that are were simply angry with BJP leadership for bringing out CAA and NRC and that it was purely public sentiment.

She said, “Few activists of the TMC surrounded my car and raised slogans against CAA. I pacified them and made them understand the need for the Act. The TMC is misleading the people in the area. But, I am sure they will not succeed.”
