The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) reiterated its recommendation given to Madhya Pradesh government to compensate families of five tribal men who died due to police atrocities. The Commission had recommended paying compensation of Rs. 1 lakh to each of the families but only Rs.50,000 each has been paid up until now, by the Tribal Welfare Department of the state.
The incident dates back to 2019 when the Commission took cognisance of media reports which stated that five tribal men were assaulted by the police at Nanpur police station in Alirajpur District and were made to drink urine when asked for water. During the proceedings, the state government confirmed that the victims were subjected to physical assault in the custody of police but it said that the allegations of forcing them to drink urine could not be substantiated.
Further, the Commission was also informed that while departmental proceedings against the eight erring police officials, including a Sub Inspector were initiated, the same were stayed by Madhya Pradesh High Court based on a writ petition challenging the proceedings.
