Actor Nusrat Jahan who is the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) Member of Parliament (MP) from Bashirhat claims that she has been receiving death threats ever since she posted this video dressed as Hindu goddess Durga on Twitter:

She had posted the video to celebrate Mahalaya, or the commencement of the festive season when Durga Puja is celebrated in her native West Bengal.

Currently Jahan is in London shooting for a Bengali movie. She has reportedly written to the Indian embassy there to provide her with security. Agencies quoted her letter as saying, “I would like to inform you that I reached London two days back on my professional purpose and after reaching here I have received a death threat via my social media pages from some fundamentalists who belong to India and neighbouring country. During my stay in London I require an immediate police protection as the threat is very serious and it is affecting my mental health. I would request you to kindly arrange to provide me a necessary protection in London.”

The MP’s letter to the High Commissioner also included screengrabs of two threats that appeared as comments on her Twitter post. Those who object to the video appear to be upset with a Muslim woman dressing up like a Hindu Goddess.

This is not the first time Nusrat Jahan has been targeted. Fundamentalists had earlier objected to her sporting sindoor at an appearance in Parliament. Her pictures have also been misused on a dating app.
