Another human has been killed in Uttar Pradesh, allegedly by those claiming to protect cows. According to a report in the Indian Express, the attack took place in Mathura district’s Tumaula village on Friday. Sher Khan alias Shera (55) was shot dead, and six of his associates were injured. The report stated that the local police alleged the men, who were from Bulandshahr, were “cattle smugglers”, who were “attacked by the villagers for smuggling cows in their vehicle.”
The police have reportedly admitted the injured to a hospital, seized the vehicle, and recovered six cows. Police have also been deployed at the hospital, Agra Range’s Inspector-General Naveen Arora told the media. While two cases were registered in connection with the violence, none had been arrested so far. Arora said that police “recovered two cartridges from the vehicle in which the injured persons were moving. We are collecting their background details.”
As per the IE report the Additional Superintendent of Police (Addl SP) Shrish Chandra said that a preliminary inquiry revealed that “residents of Jawa village came to know that a few cattle smugglers were transporting cows” and they “alerted their neighbours in Tumaula village. The villagers then blocked the road with a parked vehicle in and “forced the men transporting the cattle to stop.” Police claim that the alleged “cattle smugglers started firing and the villagers retaliated” they “ caught the men in the vehicle and started assaulting them with sticks and stones”.
Police told media-persons that they reached the spot after being alerted about the violence, and sent seven injured men, all of who were travelling in the vehicle attacked, to the hospital. Sher Khan was declared dead on arrival, according to the news report it is suspected that he was shot in the stomach. Four of the injured are critical and police are interrogating the two who were released from the hospital. The Additional SP told the media that the two men said “they were transporting the cows from Aligarh to Mewat in Haryana”. Police claimed that two of the injured had a “history of cattle smuggling.” However, Mathura Circle Officer Jitendra Kumar told the media that no one had been arrested in either case and investigations were going on.
According to the IE, Sher Khan’s son Sharukh alias Tittu has filed a complaint against unidentified people at the Kosi Kalan police station, accusing them of murder. A counter-complaint against at least nine people has also been filed by a villager named Chandra Shekhar Baba who has accused them of attempted murder, and has asked that the Cow Slaughter Act be invoked against the men he identified as Rehman, Shahzad and Anees, six unidentified people have been also charged stated the news report.
