In a very shocking and atrocious statement, BJP Mahila Morcha leader in Uttar Pradesh’s Ramkola, Sunita Singh Gaur, said that Hindu men should enter into Muslim homes and gangrape Muslim women to protect Hindu as well as India. She has been removed from her post.
As reported in The Wire, Gaur, in a comment on Facebook, wrote (in Hindi), “There is only one solution for them (Muslims). Hindu brothers should make a group of 10 and gang rape their (Muslims) mothers and sisters openly on the streets and then then hang them in the middle of the bazaar for others to see.” She goes on to say that Muslim mothers and sisters should have their “honour looted” as there is “no other way” to “protect India.”
Vijaya Rahatkar, national president of the BJP Mahila Morcha, responded to a tweet about Gaur’s posts by saying that such “hateful comments” would not be tolerated and Gaur has been expelled on June 27
While BJP is infamous for its communal and misogynistic statements, this is an extemely callous statement considering that Gaur belongs to the women’s wing and has grossly misused her position to not only pass anti-Muslim statements but has also put women’s security on stake. Earlier, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar from BJP had blamed women for the rising number of rapes in India. He had said, “If a girl is dressed decently, a boy will not look at her in the wrong way.” Further, responding to a question on whether young people should have freedom of choice, the BJP politician had said, “If you want freedom, why don’t they just roam around naked? Freedom has to be limited. These short clothes are western influences. Our country’s tradition asks girls to dress decently.” There have been multiple such outrageous statements by various BJP members across the nation with no stern action by the party leadership.
Considering the influence that the BJP has on the masses, reflected through the 2019 election results as well, such statements can be highly provocative and instigating for the followers. In a nation where rape of a new born to an aged has unfortunately become rampant, such statements will just take the already precarious situation from bad to worse. The ruling dispensations thus needs to do much more than merely expelling a person from his/her position.
