The government of Assam has appointed 221 new Foreigners’ Tribunal (FT) members to hear appeals of over 19 lakh people who have been left out of the final National Register of Citizens (NRC). The list of names of new appointees and the FT to which they have been assigned was released on Monday via a government notification PLB-136/2019/81 issued under the order of the governor by Nirnajan Baruah, Secretary to the Government of Assam, Home and Political Department.
After the final NRC was published, the excluded people were directed to take their appeals for inclusion to FTs in the state. While earlier there were just about 100 FTs in the state, the number is all set to increase to as many as 1000 tribunals across the state. The newly appointed members are also going to attend a two day training session at the Assam Administrative Staff College, Khanapara, Guwahati on September 28 and 29 before taking charge of their posting at various FTs. The new appointees will serve for a period of one year. The entire government notification with the list of names may be viewed here.
