Over 500 Bihar farmers join week-long protests at Ghazipur border

AIKS leaders promise a three times bigger delegation to join the Sunday mahapanchayat

Over 500 Bihar farmers joined a dharna camp at the Ghazipur border on September 3, 2021 as a sign of continued solidarity for India’s farmer struggle, said All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) leaders. Peasants from different districts of Bihar arrived at the Delhi border on September 1 to join protests for a week. The unit was led by state leaders like President Lalan Choudhary, General Secretary Vinod Kumar, Vice President Awadhesh Kumar and others.

On Friday, state leaders along with AIKS Joint Secretary N. K. Shukla, Finance Secretary P. Krishnaprasad, and CITU leader Surendra Singh rallied with red flags and a Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) banner. At the end of the rally, AIKS General Secretary Hannan Mollah, Joint Secretary Vijoo Krishnan and Bihar leaders addressed a public meeting.

Hitting out at the three contentious farm laws and similar pro-corporate laws, Mollah said, “The united struggle will continue until the demands of farmers are met. The September 5 Kisan Maha Rally at Muzaffarnagar will have lakhs of farmers in which over 15,000 AIKS members will take part.”

He said the united farmers’ movement will ensure that the government decisions will receive an electoral rebuff in the forthcoming Assembly elections.

Similar meetings are springing up across India since the call for Bharat Bandh on September 25 by the SKM. In Uttar Pradesh, farmers have called a meeting in Lucknow on September 9 and 10. Madhya Pradesh peasants observed a meeting on Friday while those people still in Bihar will hold a meeting on September 11. Uttarakhand and Chhattisgarh carried out meetings in the first week of September.

According to Samyukt Kisan Morcha, a target has been set to set up coordination committees in all the states before September 25, so that the Bharat Bandh can be organized more effectively than before by ensuring the participation of more organisations.

Further, preparations for the Muzaffarnagar Kisan Mahapanchayat on Sunday are in full swing. Thousands of farmers from various districts of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana and Punjab and other regions participated in the preparatory meetings with great enthusiasm. A large number of farmers from other states are also mobilising on ground.
