Uttar Pradesh police’s reputation took a beating once again as a video of a Pratapgarh woman being abused by local police went viral on social media on October 20, 2020. This is happening in a state that has been in the headlines for a heinous crime against a woman from the Valmiki community while the Chief Minister talks of Mission Shakti for women empowerment.

The beaten woman was taken to Raniganj police station on October 18 for allegedly attacking a female police officer. Superintendent of Police (SP) Anurag Aarya said the woman attempted to bite one of the officers.

Sub-Inspector (SI) Virendra Tripathi and two women constables visited the house on Sunday to settle a land dispute between the women’s family and her neighbour. The SI asked the woman for land ownership documents. According to some reports, the beating began after the woman refused to let the officers take away the documents.

Following is the video that shows the officials mercilessly beating the woman in her own house.

The disturbing video was shared widely by horrified citizens, following which police took action against the offending officers.

According to the woman, the officers visited her home in response to a complaint filed by her brother against their neighbours who had illegally sold part of their land and built a wall over the land. Her brother broke down the wall after the police made no further inquiry.
