Rs 1 crore illegal arms racket in communally sensitive Muzaffarnagar cracked by police ahead of Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls.
The move comes after 453 pistols worth Rs 1 crore were seized from Khurgan and Dabhedi villages in Shamli district on Thursday, they said.
A case was registered against seven persons namely Motiram, Sarvar, Furkan, Khurshid, Aleem, Gayyur and Sarvar in the incident, SP Ajaypal Sharma said.
While Motiram was arrested, six others are absconding, police said, adding that the stringent National Security Act will also be slapped on the accused.
In another incident, police busted an arms manufacturing unit and seized nine pistols at Kakra village here yesterday.
SHO S C Rathore said that one Sardar was arrested in the case but his accomplice managed to escape.
In a district as communally sensitive as Muzaffarnagar, which has witnessed, in the 2013 riots over 62 deaths, 92 injuries and the displacement of approximately 50,000, possession and circulation of arms illegally is all the more dangerous.
In addition to the 2013 riots, Muzaffarnagar also experienced various other communal tensions in 2016 over issues like cow slaughter, rape of a 5 year old and an inter-religion relationship of a young boy and girl.
