On the day of publication of the final National Register of Citizens (NRC) a woman identified as Sayera Khatun allegedly committed suicide by drowning herself in a well.
The 45 year old woman was a resident of in Dulabari 1 village, located near of Tezpur. Her husband Mohammed Samser Ali is a tailor. According to the family, Sayera was allegedly misinformed that her name would be excluded as she was a D Voter. Distressed and panic struck by this she flung herself into a well and died at about 8:30 AM.
But, when her son went to the Nagrik Seva Kendra (NSK) at around 10 AM, they discovered that her name had been included in the final NRC. Not just her, the names of all her family members have also been included in the NRC. This therefore appears to be a case where a poisonous concoction of fear, uncertainty and misinformation claimed an innocent woman’s life.
The body was sent for an autopsy and even now the family is in an acute state of shock. CJP volunteer motivator Major (Retd) Mubarak Ali is with them providing support and solace at this difficult time.
The final NRC was published this morning and people could start checking their names online and at NSKs from 10 AM onwards. According to the NRC authority 3,11,21,004 people were found eligible for inclusion in Final NRC and 19,06,657 were excluded from the list.
