MUMBAI: Days after Shiv Sena inducted Sillod MLA Abdul Sattar as junior minister, senior party leader and Saamna editor Sanjay Raut said on Thursday he will attend a Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) function to oppose the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the city on Saturday.

The meet is being organised by JIH, Mumbai, and Association for Protection of Civil Rights (APCR) at Marathi Patrakar Sangh, will see Raut, Justice (retd) B G Kolse Patil, senior counsel Mihir Desai and APCR president and senior advocate Yusuf Muchchala debate the relationship between CAA and NRC “to understand their constitutional implications,” said a JIH representative. Though Sena had backed CAA in Lok Sabha, it abstained from Rajya Sabha during voting. Subsequently, chief minister Uddhav Thackeray said the state would wait for Supreme Court verdict on CAA before deciding whether to oppose or support NRC.

Meanwhile, a group of community leaders has panned Congress for denying Mumbadevi MLA Amin Patel a ministerial post. “He is not just popular in his constituency (Mumbadevi), he is always available to help people. As a minister, he would have been a big asset for Congress,” said Sunni spiritual leader Maulana Moin Ashraf Quadri.
