In Maharashtra’s Akola a young 15-year-old Muslim child named Altamash has committed suicide after he was reportedly beaten, humiliated and abused by his school principal and teachers on account of his being a Muslim. As per a report, the family of Altamash has claimed that there were two teachers who would regularly and consistently beat him and psychologically abuse him.

The distraught father of the child, who studied at Guru Nanak Vidhyalaya, spoke to the media stating that his child had been fine. “It was only after he was humiliated in school by his teachers and principal that he was extremely disturbed and took the step to kill himself. Yesterday, the principal and teacher beat him and humiliated a lot that made him depressed. He returned home from school, went to tuition, and did his homework, after which he killed himself.”

The father says the child told them of the humiliating words his teachers told him and how deeply they impacted the young child, “The teachers words have been stuck in his head. The teachers have said, ‘I will kick you out of school, give you TC (transfer certificate). You Muslims students are harmful. Muslim’s children are not worthy of studying.” The parent has asked the authorities to ensure that the culprits are strictly punished after strict enquiry. According to Navbharat News, the Khadaan police have filed a case of suicide and that they will examine the CCTV footage from the school.

Bahraich: Muslim residents of Khair village in Bahraich district of Uttar Pradesh have fled after the police booked close to 200 people of their community under UAPA. 19 people were arrested and an FIR was lodged in connection with a clash on Oct 20 following a religious procession.

The police have arrested 19 people from Khair and claimed to have identified 52 others. Police officials, however, now claim the UAPA was invoked wrongly, and that they will drop it from the FIR.

Sabrang India had reported how an FIR was filed by a member of the Durga Puja procession Ashish Kumar Shukla. It was alleged that on 20th October 2018, a procession from a few villages for the immersion of a Durga idol turned violent at Khaira Bazar. Reports suggest that 40 Muslim are in police custody including those who have not been named in the FIR.

“Those 80 Muslims along with 100-200 others were hiding on the way of the procession and when it was passing through the Khaira village on way to Badnapur for immersion, they attacked it,” Shukla had said. The complainant claimed in the FIR that the attackers were armed with guns, pistols, bombs and swords and some 50 people were injured.

The village borders Nepal. Heavy police force including PAC has been deployed in Khair, and shops are closed. The village bears a deserted look, with most of the houses locked. The other houses are inhabited by the elderly, women and children. Many who have stayed back allege harassment by the police.

“There was a clash between Muslims and Hindus, but police registered FIR only against us. No FIR was lodged against people in the procession who engaged in brick-batting and attacked our houses and shops. Police are harassing us,” alleged 63-year-old Jaituna in a report by Indian Express. “All youths left home after the police started raiding our houses. Those who were found were arrested. My sons Ramzan Ali (30) and Nankau (28) are in jail,” says Jaituna, who is left with two daughters-in-law and 10 grandchildren.

The report added that those who have fled include former village head Mohammad Rasheed (45) and head cleric of Jama Masjid at Khair Bazaar, Hafiz Abdul Bari (43). “Rasheed’s family too has left. Police broke their doors and windows when women and children were inside,” says Mohammad Hasan, a neighbour. Farmer Karamatullah (55) says, “When the procession reached near Jama Masjid, some persons in the procession threw gulal on Muslims on the roadside. The latter objected, and a heated argument took place. But people intervened and the matter was resolved. Then some members in the procession again threw gulal inside the masjid, which led to an altercation. Both groups clashed.”

Additional Superintendent of Police, Bahraich, Ravindra Kumar Singh, in the report said, “So far, 71 Muslim youths have been identified as being involved in the clash. It was confirmed after scanning eight videos from locals. So far, 19 accused have been arrested.”

On why there is no FIR against the other group (Hindus), he said, “We have no evidence that two groups clashed. In the videos, people in the procession are only seen chanting ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and not being involved in violence.”

He adds that UAPA had been wrongly been invoked, and they are probing how this happened. “We are now invoking Criminal Law Amendment Act,” he said in the report.

Sabrang India had reported that Human rights groups Rihai Manch and NCHRO (National Confederation of Human Rights Organizations), whose joint delegation visited the area on October 28, found the enaction of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA)-1967 and other laws unnecessary in this case and poke many holes in the FIR. They claimed that the complaint was prepared even before the incident took place. Rihai Manch stated that this whole incident was concocted to show Muslims as anti-national and terrorists.

Informal rules and discrimination by landlords are taking their toll on India's commercial capital.

Mumbai Housing Society

On the inauguration of U.S. President Donald Trump, an Indian real estate company ran an advertisement with the slogan “Homes that don’t discriminate”, calling for an end to prejudice in India’s housing market based on gender, religion or caste.

While the ad was unusual, the sentiment was familiar to millions of Indians who have tried to rent or buy city homes only to be denied because they were single, ate meat, were of a certain caste or from a certain region.

Informal rules and discrimination by Indian landlords to keep out religious minorities and single people are eroding the multi-cultural nature of India’s cities and dividing communities into ghettos, analysts say.

“It’s 2017 – and we’re still encountering discrimination,” said Rishi Dogra of NestAway Technologies that ran the ad.

“People should be able to move freely and find a living space anywhere in the country,” said Dogra, marketing head for the company founded by four young male graduates after they had trouble finding a home in Bengaluru.

Such discrimination has forced many people to the suburbs, making Indian city centres less diverse and cosmopolitan, with high rents already making them unaffordable to poorer workers.

Mumbai, India’s financial hub and a magnet for migrants from across the country, has traditionally had enclaves for Catholics, Parsis, Bohri Muslims and others. They set up housing societies, or co-operatives, to help other community members.

As the city grew and drew more migrants, powerful housing societies have often denied homes on the basis of religion, caste, food preferences and even professions.

The divide grew after bloody Hindu-Muslim riots in 1992-’93 and still persists, said Zakia Soman, a co-founder at Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan, a non-profit organisation for Muslim women.

A Facebook group called “Indians Against Discrimination” was set up in 2015 after a young Muslim woman was asked to leave her flat a week after she moved in, because of her religion.

“When it comes to living spaces, we have become very insular,” Soman said.

“The city is getting increasingly ghettoised as a result, weakening our social fabric and polarising us further. That doesn’t bode well,” she said.

Local courts have ruled against discrimination by housing associations in several cases, but there have also been contradictory rulings.

Rampant discrimination

In a 2005 case, India’s top court ruled in favour of a Parsi housing society in Ahmedabad, saying it could limit its membership to Parsis and not admit others.

“The constitution guarantees our right to equality, but housing societies can still frame their own guidelines which may be discriminatory,” said Vinod Sampat, a real estate lawyer.

A draft housing policy for Maharashtra state, where Mumbai is located, has dropped a clause that prevents discrimination in housing. This may leave those looking to rent or buy property with fewer protections, Sampat said.

Government officials have said non-discrimination is already protected by the constitution, so there is no need for the clause.

That has not reassured people like Shikha Makan, who made a film called Bachelor Girls on housing bias against single women – including Bollywood actors – in Mumbai.

“Not being able to find a home in a big city like Mumbai is a shame,” she said.

“It is marginalising single women and other minorities.”
