Tirath Singh Rawat, a Member of Parliament from Pauri Garhwal will be Uttarakhand’s new Chief Minister. According to news reports, the decision to appoint Tirath Singh Rawat CM, was taken at the Uttarakhand Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislature party meeting on Wednesday. The meeting was held a day after Trivendra Singh Rawat resigned as the Chief Minister.   

Tirath Singh Rawat, had earlier served as the chief of BJP’s Uttarakhand unit from 2013 to 2015. According to news report in The Hindustan Times, NDTV and others, over 50 BJP MLAs reached the party state headquarters in Dehradun on Wednesday along with parliamentarians including Union education minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, Ajay Bhatt, Mala Rajya Lakshmi and Naresh Bansal. Tirath Singh Rawat, will be sworn in today, March 10. He has one year to prepare for the state elections due in 2022, in 2017, the party came to power winning 57 out of 70 seats.

His predecessor,  60-year-old Trivendra Singh Rawat, resigned as Uttarakhand Chief Minister on Tuesday. He would have completed four years as CM, in a few days. However, on Monday, he is said to have met with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership in Delhi, and his exit as CM was inevitable.
