The Delhi Union of Journalists (DUJ) has condemned by what it terms as “the attempt by the newly sworn in BJP government in Delhi to deny entry for certain reporters to the Assembly to cover the proceedings.  Three journalists from ANI, ABP News, and PTI were stopped at the gates of the Assembly building when they were going to cover the Assembly on February 24, 2025, the first day of the new session. On the second day, five journalists from Times Now, Navbharat, News Nation, News18, Zee News, and Jantantra were denied entry. Some of these journalists were later allowed inside after their colleagues protested. The Speaker’s office said it was a miscommunication.”

However, says the statement issued by the DUJ, a pattern is clearly visible in this episode. The DUJ, along with other journalists’ bodies, has been demanding that the authorities reinstate the system of journalists’ passes. The Delhi government seems to be copying the increasingly restrictive methods being employed in Parliament to restrict coverage. The DUJ has repeatedly protested the fact that the Parliament Secretariat now issues only temporary/ sessional passes even for veteran journalists as well as those who fall into the long and distinguished journalists category.

The DUJ has also condemned the basis of the central and state accreditation policies that are discriminatory in composition, favour certain journalists, are biased against independent journalists and even target select unions and associations. These policies and practices should be reviewed.

The Delhi Union of Journalists has urged the Delhi Assembly authorities to immediately issue regular passes for all eligible journalists to cover the Assembly proceedings, in the interests of transparency.

After all, the statement adds, “the nation wants to know. “ The statement has been issued by Sujata Madhok, President, SK Pande, Vice President and Am Jigeesh, General Secretary.

On Friday, March 13, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) introduced in the Delhi Assembly as resolution against the National Population Register (NPR). The resolution was moved amidst concerns of burden of documentary evidence, especially among the economically weak and uneducated, as well as fears of persecuted minorities and oppressed classes.

MLA Atishi Marlena addressed the assembly saying, “There is widespread fear about the NPR. This is because 80-90 percent of the people in the country do not have the documents required for it. In fact, I think 50 percent of the people in this assembly today might not have their own birth certificates. Even if they do, their parents are unlikely to have birth certificates. This is because, even today, many people are not born in hospitals.”

She went on to highlight instances of how various senior central government ministers such as Prakash Jawadekar and even Amit Shah have tried to allegedly obfuscate facts about the NPR and its connection with the census and eventually the National Register of Citizens (NRC). “Our ministers are trying to bring in the NPR through a backdoor in a bid to actually lay the groundwork for NRC. We condemn this and demand that this process be stopped, not just in Delhi, but across India.”

MLA Raghav Chadha raised another concern about the implementation of the NPR process that is scheduled to begin from April 1, 2020. “At a time when we are considering postponing the IPL, and shutting down movie theaters, why can’t we see the threat the Corona virus poses to people where NPR officials will be going door to door to collect data for the NPR. Even if one person is infected, he could spread infection to so many different people,” said Chadha. He also highlighted how the previous NPR had asked for 13 data points as opposed to the new one where 21 data points are required.

After a series of speakers including Dilip Pandey and Jarnail Singh raised a variety of concerns, Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assemby Vijendra Gupta tried to allay fears by quoting from Amit Shah’s Thursday speech in the Lok Sabha. But when arguments ensued, the proceedings of the house were temporarily suspended.

Delhi assembly on Tuesday witnessed ugly scenes as angry legislators continuously shouted Narendra Modi murdabad slogans during the special session, convened to discuss the fallout of demonetisation announcement.

A lot of AAP MLAs were seen shouting Narendra Modi hai hai and Narendra Modi murdabad slogans during the proceeding.

Delhi assembly has 67 AAP MLAs and three BJP legislators.

Narendra Modi murdabad
The ruckus then forced the assembly speaker, Ram Niwas Goel, to briefly adjourned the proceedings.

At one stage, Goel asked the BJP MLA, Vijender Gupta to keep quiet as the assembly wasn’t his party office.

“The way you are presenting facts is najaayez and behuda. You are doing it for cheap publicity,” Goel said.

Alka Lamba slammed PM Modi for mocking Indian mothers.

She said, “I’ve found the mother our prime minister had talked about in Japan. She has denied that her son never deposited Rs 2.5 lakh in her account. She also wants Modi ji to take action against her son for depositing black money in her account.”

She also highlighted how BJP’s West Bengal unit had managed to deposit Rs 1 crore on the day Modi was to make the announcement on demonetisation.

Another AAP MLA, Rajesh Gupta said, “Woh (1975) nasbandi ki emergency thi aur ye notebandi ki emergency hai.”

Delhi chief minister, Arvind Kejriwal on Monday had announced holding an emergency session assembly to discuss the “explosive” situation arising out of demonetisation, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Monday even as he attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his ‘kadak chai’ remark saying the poor was being “fed poison” instead.

Kejriwal said, considering the hardship being faced by people, the Delhi government has decided to deploy civil defence volunteers who will provide citizens queueing up outside banks and ATMs with water and refreshments, while also assisting them with paper work.

Sticking to his demand that demonetisation be rolled back, the AAP chief lashed out at Modi, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, saying the Centre has lost “all sense of proportion due to lack of any concrete plan in executing the scheme.”

“The situation is just the opposite of what the Prime Minister said. The poor are not sleeping. They are spending nights outside banks. Only Modiji’s friends are having good sleep. He has made the poor drink poison in the name of strong tea ‘kadak chai’,” Kejriwal said.

Kejriwal is speaking live now:

  • There are lot of contradictions in Modi’s statement and his action
  • There is an environment of terror in Delhi. IT department conduct raids on traders, but why are they not raiding Janardan Redyy in Karnataka?
  • Every night people are being threatened that they will be punished if they deposit more than Rs 2.5 lakh. But they allowed Vijay Mallya to flee
  • They are threatening poor but they are friends with rich
  • How long has it been since Panama list was out? Prime Minister’s friends names are in the list
  • An entry in one Shubhendu Amitabh from Birla Group says Rs 25 crore against Gujarat CM’s name
