The Cybercrime Unit of the Hyderabad Police arrested Sravan Vurapalli, a BJP corporator, along with three others on May 16th for sharing an old video clip from Bengal that allegedly depicted rigging at a polling booth in Hyderabad. The video, which was falsely claimed to be from Bahadurpura, was circulated on social media earlier this week, after the recent Lok Sabha polling in Hyderabad.

Sravan Vurapalli, who represents Malkajgiri as a BJP GHMC corporator, was taken into custody from his office on Thursday evening, according to police officials. The arrests came after a complaint was filed by officials from the Election Commission of India (ECI), who reported the spread of the misleading video.

The video shared was said to convey poll rigging at Bahadurpura in Hyderabad. It shows the inside of a polling station, where an officer can be seen wearing a surgical mask. The footage also captures a person in a striped dark blue round-collar T-shirt standing beside a voting compartment, directing people as they enter. Each time someone exits the compartment, a beep can be heard. Social media users had been claiming that AIMIM had rigged the polling in the city.

However, according to the election commission of Telangana’s chief electoral officer (CEO) Vikas Raj the video shared by the BJP corporator and others is not from Telangana at all and is fake. The Hyderabad police had also earlier debunked the video and designated it as fake. The video is reportedly from a Bangla language channel.

The CEO Vikas Raj had also stated on May 1st that there were several complaints circulating about fake and doctored videos that were going to be addressed.

Interestingly, on the day of polls in Hyderabad, on May 13th, BJP’s candidate Madhavi Latha for the Hyderabad seat had also claimed there was rigging. On the day of polling, she had also gone around reportedly asking burqa clad Muslim women to show their faces and identity cards at the polling booths, which led to uproar on social media and an FIR registered against her. The candidate also had a fresh case filed against her recently for using ‘dummy’ EVMs (Electronic Voting Machines) to manipulate polling’s, as per a report in The Hindu. The Hyderabad Police also took two other BJP workers for reportedly manipulating polls. Latha was further booked with a case for even going to the police station and taking the EVMs that the police had seized from the Mangalghat Locality.

Fake video of Union Health Minister being ‘beaten up’ resurfaces https://sabrangindia.in/fake-video-union-health-minister-being-beaten-resurfaces/ Sat, 03 Oct 2020 12:16:45 +0000 http://localhost/sabrangv4/2020/10/03/fake-video-union-health-minister-being-beaten-resurfaces/ The minister Dr Harshvardhan himself had called the video fake in 2016, but who is trending it again today, and why?

In 2016, Union Health Minister Dr Harshvadhan had to take to twitter to assure his followers that he was safe and sound and the video claiming to show crowds beating “him” was false. He had then called it “misleading content” spread with “malicious and mischievous intent”.

The video is back making rounds with similar claims, this time the fake news blames “farmers” for beating up the Union Minister, and is being shared on social media, and Whatsapp. Those sharing it, do not pause to think that the Union Health Minister is busy tweeting in support of all policies of his government, and has not gone to meet anyone on the street, leave alone farmers protesting the agriculture laws they deem dangerous. The man in the video is clearly not Dr Harshvardhan, who would not step out, if at all, without his security detail. The policemen seen in the video do not seem to belong to Delhi Police, and no one is wearing a mask. Therefore making it clear that it is an old video, of another incident, and clearly fake news. But believers of Whatsapp university do not care.

Meanwhile multiple fact checks have already exposed the video as fake. The one done by The Logical Indian, is dated from West Bengal, where the 2016 incident took place and was reported that year.

Today, the video claimed police were attempting to rescue a man from the mob beating him, claiming it was Dr Harshvardhan who was under attack by farmers. However, it was an incident first reported on October 20, 2016. According to an NDTV report quoted by TLI, the ruckus was that of a local BJP leader Subrata Mishra was beaten up allegedly by India Trinamool Congress workers. News agency ANI, had share it then,

It is not clear who is trending it again today, or rather who will benefit from spreading fake news that the health minister was attacked by farmers. The Union Health minister has had a smooth run in office, mosty online, and via video conferencing, even as the Covid-19 crisis rages on. He has been posting regular updates on what was on his priority list daily. Today it was the inauguration of the ‘Atal Tunnel’ at Himachal Pradesh by Prime Minister Modi.

A Twitter handle called DurgaMenon which is followed by PM Narendra Modi, Power Minister Piyush Goyal and many other senior BJP leaders has posted a video on her Twitter timeline. The accompanying text says, “DK Shivkumar’s home with just one Locker room opened..Congis whr will u hide ur faces???“. The video posted by this Twitter handle shows a locker full of cash and more bags full of cash on the floor.

This same video is viral on Facebook as can be seen in the video below. The identical text “Shivkumar home with just 1 Locker room opened” across most of the Facebook posts also indicates that this video is crazily viral on WhatsApp and is being uploaded by users to Facebook after they received this video as a WhatsApp forward with the aforementioned text. Even DurgaMenon states in tweet that she got the video via WhatsApp.

In reality, the video that is being passed around is that of an Income Tax raid on T&T law firm in Delhi founded by Rohit Tandon. In total, 13 crores worth of cash was found in raids on Rohit Tandon’s law firm and residences in Delhi in December 2016. The video that is now being shared as cash found in DK Shivkumar’s house was originally posted by a journalist Shiv Sunny on his Twitter timeline on December 10, 2016. He posted the video with the text, “Video of over Rs 8 cr cash (Rs 2 cr in new currency) seized by Delhi Police from T&T law firm in Delhi’s GK.“. The video can be seen below.

Recently, after a RSS Karyakarta Rajesh was murdered in Kerala, a fake video from Brazil claiming it to be Rajesh was circulated. Every newsworthy political issue is almost invariably followed by a fake video these days, and more often than not, these videos are circulated with a narrative that directly or indirectly benefits BJP as a party.

BJP state chief Kummanam Rajasekharan has been booked for allegedly posting fake video on his Twitter handle against CPIM. The Kannur policeon Wednesday registered a case against him on various charges of promoting enmity between groups under IPC Section 153 (a). A petition was filed against Rajasekharan by SFI Kannur district president Muhammad Siraj.

Kummanam, through a video, had claimed that CPM activists were celebrating over the killing of an RSS activist Biju in Payyannur. He also claimed that CPM workers celebrated Biju’s death in at least 14 places in Kerala.

Siraj, in his complaint, alleged that the video was fake and Kummanam was trying to defame CPM, instigate RSS workers and create tension between the activists of both the parties.

Meanwhile, state police chief TP Senkumar has directed the Kannur district police chief to investigate and verify the authenticity of the video.

Kummanam said that he was willing to be arrested and go to jail. Meanwhile, BJP Thiruvananthapuram district president S Suresh was on Tuesday booked for hate speech against political rivals. He threatened CPM saying the peace in Kerala was RSS’ generosity adding that ‘we will go after the hands and heads of those who attack us’.

Suresh was addressing  a protest march in front of the Neyyattinkara DSP office against an attack on RSS workers at a village Anavoor in Thiruvananthapuram. He was charged by Neyyattinkara police under Section 295 (A) of IPC.
