It is a well known fact that India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has scant respect for democratic processes.  He rarely attends the parliament. He has spent more days abroad than in the parliament. In the last four years he has made several times more public speeches than he gave in the parliament. He has never addressed a press conference as a Prime Minister in India. His mode of communication to his countrymen, apart from his rhetorical public speeches,  is twitter and his monthly radio speeches called ‘Man ki Baat’.

Rahul hug Modi

Coming from a former RSS pracharak it is something not to be surprised. The RSS, the parent organisation of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was born in 1925 out of marriage with Hindu nationalist ideologies propounded by BS Moonje and VD Savarkar who adored Hitler and Mussolini. B.S.Moonje had a personal audience with Mussolini on March 19, 1931., in Palazzo Venzia, the headquarters of the Fascist government. He visited Italy’s Central Military School of Physical Education, the fascist academy of Physical Education and Balilla and Avanguardisti, organisations.

Moonje came back to India and helped K.S Hedgewar to found the semi fascist organization Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh (RSS). RSS is said to be a cultural organization which has a membership of about five million. If taken by numbers RSS is the largest fascist organization in the world. After its founding RSS started setting up physical training centers for youth called ‘Shakhas’, some of which even give training in fire arms. Their fascist designs came to the fore when a RSS member Nathuram Godse gunned down, father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi. RSS was banned shortly afterwards.

BJP is the political arm of RSS and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a former full time pracharak of the RSS. His core values are that of RSS. He has proven that he’s primarily a RSS pracharak then only a state functionary,  especially during the 2002 pogrom against Muslims in Gujarat, when he was the Chief Minister of the state. He never ever showed least bit of remorse for the genocide of Muslims led by organized mobs led by RSS activists.

A year after assuming office Narendra Modi’s shock therapy shook the nation to the core. On 8 November, 2016 Modi in a televised address told the nation that high valued notes of Rs 500, Rs 1000 will cease as legal tenders from midnight onwards. What followed was a mayhem. About 200 people lost lives directly due to demonetization. Millions of workers lost their jobs. The country has not recovered from that shock even now. Even for wrecking the nation, Modi has not shown any remorse or empathized with the common people.
Modi by his political ideology and his governance track record is a personification of a true-blue fascist.

Even hard core fascists can be shocked. For Modi, that day came on the afternoon of July 20. In a blistering speech Congress President Rahul Gandhi tore apart the Modi government. He laid bare Modi’s election promise to the youth of India to provide millions of jobs, the betraying of farmers, traders and the artisans. He then asked PM to explain to the country why a ₹45,000-crore contract was taken away from the state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and handed over to a “corporate friend” who had “never, ever built an airplane and had a debt of ₹35,000 crore”.

He then said that BJP’s politics is driven by hate. He said that Modi and his friends mock him as Pappu (a byword for a good for nothing fellow) but he has no hatred toward Modi or BJP. Rahul Gandhi then walked nonchalantly up the isle of the parliament and hugged Modi. A bewildered Modi took some time to respond. When he understood what had happened,  he called Mr. Gandhi and gave him a patronizing tap on his shoulder. The job was done and the un-caged lion was cornered!

Rahul Gandhi’s hug has a magnanimous meaning for the world. Hate mongers should be countered by love. The physical touch has very significant importance in physical interaction. Only people who love or hate touch each other. A loving touch or a violent slap!  In a Counter World, the violent hate mongers should be physically hugged lovingly by peace mongers. From the lynching mobs  of India who kill people for their food habits to the violent thug at the White House who separate children from the parents should be hugged lovingly.  We should remember that fascists are a minority. If all the sane headed peace mongers hugged the violent fascists, as John Lennon sang, “And the world will live as one”. So go out and hug a fascist.

Seventee year old, Copious Debbrama’s anguished cry to the victorious politicians condoning violennce and arson: “Think of the students about to give exams!”

Over 20 locations in the tiny state of Tripura descended into violence and anarchy with the BJP’s defeat of the Left Front in Tripura. Facebook and social media are rife with such gory and bloody details. Many attacks, however, have gone unreported. In Jirania, a small town in Tripura, 2 people were killed (one woman died of explosion, other man chopped off), 60 activists were physically tortured, 400 houses were ransacked, looted, 5 houses gutted, 7 CPI(M) party office vandalised, 5 party offices gutted, 1 CITU, 1 DYFI office ransacked and 4 cars set on fire. This is not a one of or a unique attack. Attacks have been unleashed across the state by the BJP activists and cadre of the left activists and left spaces.

In Kamalpur, a Nagar panchayat in Dhalai district of Tripura, 19 people were physically tortured, 4 houses (including one of LC Secretary) was gutted, 200 houses were attacked and looted. Apart from this, 3 CPI(M) party offices were vandalised, 5 Trade Union offices were captured, 2 cars, 2 Battery Autos and 2 bikes of Motor workers broken.Such instances of violence were reported from a total of about 20 places from across the state.

Tripura is Burning: Pictures tell the story says an impassioned post, on Facebook, by Copious Debbarma, a 3rd year student of Human Physiology Honours at MBB college, who has updated photographs of the arson and violence Tripura, with the following message:

“I Want to request to all the political Leaders who won the election to control their supporters to stop the violence, burning houses, many kids of those families are going to appear 10th, 12th exam, it seems some of them lost their admit cards, books …. How will they face the exam?? Please think about those people …..”

HariBhakt.com

At some point during the Khalistan movement, I came across a brief news item about a constable of the Punjab Police killed by Delhi Police personnel. The two teams had completed their interrogation of a suspected militant. Whose job was it to clean up the blood? Disagreement, a scuffle, a killing.

Legitimized brutality; the stench of blood inflaming the senses; the knowledge of absolute power and absolute impunity.
All of India is that interrogation room now.

Hindu Rashtra is here.

Has there not been violence earlier in this land? Yes of course there has been. A full seven decades of an independent state’s violence against the people of the land declared to be India – against dispossessed peasants and tribal people, against industrial workers, against the people of Kashmir, and of the states of the North East; centuries of violence by savarna Hindu society against the Dalit-bahujan; misogynist, sexist violence against women, up to and including female foetuses in the womb; decades of coldly planned and executed communal violence by institutionalized systems of riot production coordinated by the organizations of the RSS – against Muslims, against Christians, and as a secondary force, against Sikhs in 1984.

What is unique about this conjuncture, then?

What is specific, what is unique, is the entwining together of all these strands of violence into one thick, blood-soaked rope –  the violence of the pro-corporate and bought-out state; of ‘Indian nationalism’ cast in the savarna, masculinist, Hindu nationalist mould; of misogyny, of heteronormativity; of propertied contempt for the dispossessed – all of these now woven thickly into the Hindutva ideology, in which hatred and contempt for non-savarna North Indian Hindu culture is the driving force; in which the non-Hindu other is to be decimated physically, because the very presence of Muslims and Christians in the land of Savarkar and Golwalkar, is an affront.

There were signposts to this new land of India in 2014, when Narendra Modi’s multi-million dollar publicity machine (as well as many reasonable intellectuals) persuaded us  that Modi was done with carnage, that he would establish a centrist, reasonable, growth oriented  government.  ‘Growth oriented’ is code, as we all know, for corporate loot of common resources and the continued trajectory of an inequitable, unjust and ecologically unsustainable capitalist agenda, but that had already been established as the agenda of all mainstream parties.

But there was that other element, Hindu Rashtra as the explicit agenda, and the signposts to it were there, back in 2014, before the elections.

The physical attack in Thirur, Kerala by RSS and BJP activists on Hindu preacher, Swami Sandeepanandagiri, because he said in a public lecture that the Bhagavad Gita is a communist text, and Sree Krishna was the first communist.

The relentless propagation for about a decade at least, growing in strength since 2014, of the idea that there is a planned conspiracy of ‘love jihad’, claiming that Hindu women are being enticed by Muslim men into marriage so as to convert them. These claims have been demolished again and again, and yet the same lies are repeated till today by Hindutva ideologues, on prime time TV, on their tame channels.

The violence against women refusing to be docile – young women beaten for their dress, for being at pubs, for being women, for being defiant.
The signposts were there. Savarkarite Hindutva with its slogan of consolidating Hindu society and militarizing it – this consolidation or samrasta being touted by Hindutva ideologues today as being progressive and anti-caste; when in fact Savarakar’s attempt to modernize Hinduism and free it from its shackles, was only the road to forever rendering the Muslim and Christian non-Indian, for only those whose punyabhu or sacred land, is ‘here’ can be Indian.

But of course, so visceral is the savarna hatred for the Dalit bahujan, that this Savarkarite version of Hindutva has few takers – as Dalits from Una to those who have faced a thousand other humiliations and lynchings can testify.

It is still Golwalkar who has the last word on Hindutva:
The non-Hindu people of Hindustan must either adopt Hindu culture and language, must learn and respect and hold in reverence the Hindu religion, must entertain no idea but of those of glorification of the Hindu race and culture … In a word they must …stay in the country, wholly subordinated to the Hindu nation, claiming nothing, deserving no privileges, far less any preferential treatment—not even citizens’ rights.

This passage is often disowned by Hindutvavaadis – it was not Golwalkar who wrote it, it is an interpolation, and so on. Interesting, that they should not own up to the statement publicly and proudly. But that is quite characteristic of their slyness – disown even Godse if it comes to that. (They cannot of course, own up the fact that the sobriquet of ‘Veer’ was conferred on Savarkar by himself, in a text he himself wrote under a pseudonym!)

What has Modi accomplished in these three years? Under his shadow and with his explicit indulgence, Hindu Rashtra is being established. Not firmly yet, still being consolidated, but it is up, it is crawling on its millipede-like feet. There is absolutely no reason why a state driven by corporate capital should need xenophobia or racism or communalism or patriarchy or casteism. There is no necessary link between the two kinds of structures at all.

And that is the difference between earlier regimes and this one – despite every internal contradiction, this version of Hindu Rashtra fuses marauder capitalism with all of the above. Africans in India, people from the North East in the mainland, and of course, Kashmiris anywhere – deep visceral hatred and legitmized violence against all of these have been made visible as never before. This fusion is at the heart of Hindu Rashtra.

Hence the need to recognize two features explicitly, both of which are integral to Hindutva. The hatred of the Muslim Other is one. In this, the cow is but one alibi (we remember you, Akhlaque, we remember you Junaid, we remember you, Pehlu Khan…so many many others).

But the bland slogan of Swachh Bharat too, even the banal toilet, can serve as an opportunity to humiliate and even kill Muslims (we remember you, Zafar Hussain.)

Every slogan of this government is slick with blood.

JNU is under relentless attack for being ‘anti-national’, but Najeeb was disappeared for being Muslim.

But if only Muslims and Christians were Hindutva’s enemy, then Hindu Rashtra should be secure. If RSS ideology was natural to the rest of the people in this land called India, then Hindutva would not have to keep the violence going at an everyday level, normalizing blood lust and violence against every dissenter to the Hindutva project. From those refusing to stand compulsorily for the national anthem played at cinema screenings (in whose service proud ‘Indians’ can terrorize even a man in a wheelchair), to university students organizing a seminar on ‘Cultures of Protest’,

Hindutva’s “intimate enemy” (in Ashis Nandy’s immortal phrase) is very much to be sought out and destroyed – the Dalit, the hundreds of thousands of people classified as Hindu,  who may be savarna, but who do not subscribe to Hindutva.

The real question is – why is Hindutva not complacent yet? With the government and the courts very often, and the police and the army, and the Electronic Voting Machines, all with them?

Why are they afraid of women and men who define Hinduism their own way? Why are they afraid of centuries old traditions in which Sita is the heroine, not Ram; in which pre-Aryan goddesses are dark and fertile, dangerous and free; in which sex is not a pallid limited thing dictated by hypocritical priests but a multi-species, multi-gender splendid fluid thing in glorious technicolour? Why are they so afraid of people who love whom they love, regardless of their gender, their caste, their religion? Why are they afraid of independent women who choose to live their lives on their own terms, why are they so scared of young people who post anti-Hindu Right comments on Facebook?

But they should be afraid. Against Hindu Rashtra we are united – we, its Other and its Intimate Enemy. We will resist relentlessly their homogenizing and disenfranchising nationalist project – we who will not love by the rules; who will not be defined by our legitimate fathers because in the worlds we create, birth and fatherhood will not be the determinants of identity.

Amongst us of course, there are differences and arguments and bitter debates. Bitter histories to face up to and destabilize and heal. Privileges to be spurned, and rights to be snatched. But what we need to recognize is that solidarities and alliances are built not on birth-based identities, but on politics forged out of common struggle, as the women’s movement knows from its decades of experience. Most feminisms never thought of men, but of patriarchy as the enemy, and now we are not even a ‘women’s’ movement, but a mutually intersecting set of struggles and movements that are queer feminist, and we include transpeople and men and sex-workers, and also Dalit feminists who think sex work cannot be ‘work’ and that prostitution is violence. Yet we stumble along, we keep talking to one another, we keep shifting our own understandings in dialogue and argument.

And this is our strength. We are united against Hindu Rashtra, which would impose on us the peace of the grave. We will fight them, and we will fight among ourselves – cacophonous, unruly, turbulent, reckless
.
We will not let Hindu Rashtra proceed much further on its millipede legs.
As it creeps, we will march. Together and apart.

The Hindutva camp led by RSS despite its anti-national, anti-egalitarian and de-humanised world view and ideological commitments survives and thrives due to idiotic and devoid of common sense statements of characters like the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader from Hyderabad, Asaduddin Owaisi.

The RSS knows it very well that Hindutva flag-bearers betrayed India’s glorious freedom struggle against British rule and its credentials about loyalty to a democratic-secular Indian polity are highly questionable. It keeps on trying to raise issues like singing of Vande Mataram song which neither the RSS nor the Hindu Maha Sabha led by Hindutva icon, VD Savarkar ever sang against the British rule. Recently Mohan Bhagwat, RSS chief has come out with yet another issue to remain a contender for nationalist tag.

While speaking at RSS headquarter, Resham Bagh, Nagpur on March 3 he declared: “Now the time has come when we have to tell the new generation to chant 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' (Hail Mother India). It should be real, spontaneous and part of all-round development of the youth”.[i] Bhagwat while demanding chanting of 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' also stated that this was necessitated as some forces are telling the youth not to say 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai'.

Asaduddin Owaisi, true to his and the AIMIM’s historic role in keeping Hindutva organisations like RSS/Shiv Sena in the news and help them in their polarising game instead of challenging their credentials about loyalty to our democratic-secular polity in a speech at Latur, Maharashtra, reacted by declaring, he will not chant ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ even if a knife is put to his throat.[ii]  In a prompt response, Shiv Sena and other Hindutva organisations told Owaisi to go to Pakistan.

Owaisi raised a pertinent point: “Nowhere in the Constitution it says that one should say, ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’”. But instead of challenging the Hindutva credentials of commitment to a democratic-secular Indian polity, he fell into the Hindutva trap.

It is true that the RSS which is inimical towards a secular polity has been adding more and more conditions for Indian nationality. It was not long ago that beef eating was made a condition for denying Indian nationality. Owaisi’s genuine reaction should have been to demand proof from the RSS about its loyalty towards a secular- democratic India. But he chose to be as illogical as Bhagwat and, in fact, facilitated RSS in turning a debate between Hindutva and secular India into a Hindu vs. Muslim issue.

It is as true as daylight that the ‘Bharat Mata’ which the RSS dreams of did not came into being on August 15, 1947. ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ in fact, is the slogan with which the RSS oath (pratigya) ends. It is mandatory for all members of RSS to take this oath once a year.

It is to be noted that in the functioning of the RSS this oath and its prayer (prarthana) are the two texts which express total commitment to the building and nurturing a Hindu Rashtra (Hindu nation). As we will see in the following original texts of  both, ‘Motherland’ is referred to as the ‘Land of Hindus’ and it is for building a ‘Hindu Rashtra’ that RSS members have ‘girded up our loins’. Moreover, one becomes a member of RSS “to achieve all round greatness of Bharatvarsha by fostering the growth of my sacred Hindu religion, Hindu society, and Hindu culture.”

RSS Prayer:
“Affectionate Motherland, I eternally bow to you/O Land of Hindus, you have reared me in comfort/O Sacred Land, the Great Creator of Good, may this body of mine be dedicated to you/I again and again bow before You/O God Almighty, we the integral part of the Hindu Rashtra salute you in reverence/For Your cause have we girded up our loins/Give us Your Blessings for its accomplishment”.[iii]

RSS Oath:
“Before the all powerful God and my ancestors, I most solemnly take this oath, that I become a member of the RSS in order to achieve all round greatness of Bharatvarsha by fostering the growth of my sacred Hindu religion, Hindu society, and Hindu culture. I shall perform the work of the Sangh honestly, disinterestedly, with my heart and soul, and I shall adhere to this goal all my life. Bharat Mata ki Jai”.[iv]

Thus according to RSS sacred documents all members are committed not to a democratic-secular Indian polity created by the Constituent Assembly but building a Hindu Rashtra like Muslim Rashtra of Pakistan. RSS has always been steadfast in its opposition to India which came into being on August 15, 1947. When Indians were celebrating Independence of a democratic-secular nation, it was RSS which denigrated it and all other symbols defining it.

Just a day before the Independence of India, the English organ of the RSS, Organiser (August 14, 1947) openly denigrated the choice of the Tri-colour as the National Flag in the following words:

"The people who have come to power by the kick of fate may give in our hands the Tricolour but it will never be respected and owned by Hindus. The word three is in itself an evil, and a flag having three colours will certainly produce a very bad psychological effect and is injurious to a country."

The same issue of Organiser went on to reject in totality, a composite and democratic India using following harsh words in an editorial, ‘Whither India’:

“Let us no longer allow ourselves to be influenced by false notions of nationhood. Much of the mental confusion and the present and future troubles can be removed by the ready recognition of the simple fact that in Hindusthan only the Hindus form the nation and the national structure must be built on that safe and sound foundation […] the nation itself must be built up of Hindus, on Hindu traditions, culture, ideas and aspirations”.

Democracy and egalitarianism are the two important pillars of Indian polity. Both have always been on the firing line of the RSS. Guru MS Golwalkar, the most prominent ideologue and second RSS supremo after founder Hedgewar decreed as early as 1940 debunked democracy. While addressing 1350 top level cadres of the RSS at its headquarters at Nagpur in 1940, he declared:

“The RSS inspired by one flag, one leader and one ideology is lighting the flame of Hindutva in each and every corner of this great land.”[v] This slogan of one flag, one leader and one ideology was directly borrowed from the programmes of the Nazi and Fascist parties of Europe.

RSS and other Hindutva organisations make no mistake in equating Hinduism with casteism. They oppose an egalitarian India which promises to provide social, political and economic equality and discard casteism. For them the Manusmriti – which condemns lower castes and women to a sub-human life – should be the constitution of Hindu Rashtra instead of the democratic-secular Constitution. When the Indian Constituent Assembly adopted a democratic-secular Constitution under the guidance of Dr. BR Ambedkar. Savarkar the icon of Hindutva politics declared:
Manusmriti is that scripture which is most worship-able after Vedas for our Hindu Nation and which from ancient times has become the basis of our culture – customs, thought and practice. This book for centuries has codified the spiritual and divine march of our nation. Even today the rules which are followed by crores of Hindus in their lives and practice are based on Manusmriti. Today Manusmriti is Hindu Law”.[vi]

When the democratic-secular Indian Constitution was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on November 26, 1949, the RSS mouthpiece, Organiser, complained in an editorial on November 30, 1949:

“But in our constitution there is no mention of the unique constitutional development in ancient Bharat. Manu’s Laws were written long before Lycurgus of Sparta or Solon of Persia. To this day his laws as enunciated in the Manusmriti excite the admiration of the world and elicit spontaneous obedience and conformity. But to our constitutional pundits that means nothing”.

Opposition by the RSS to an egalitarian Constitution of India was the outcome of its eternal belief in casteism. Golwalkar, the highly revered RSS chief declared that casteism was synonymous with Hindu nation. According to him, the Hindu people are none else but:

"the Virat Purusha, the Almighty manifesting himself… [according to purusha sukta] sun and moon are his eyes, the stars and the skies are created from his nabhi [navel] and Brahmin is the head, Kshatriya the hands, Vaishya the thighs and Shudra the feet. This means that the people who have this fourfold arrangement, i.e., the Hindu People, is [sic] our God. This supreme vision of Godhead is the very core of our concept of ‘nation’ and has permeated our thinking and given rise to various unique concepts of our cultural heritage.[Italics as in the original][vii]

It is to be noted that according to Manusmriti (chapter 1 and verse 91), “One occupation only the lord prescribed to the Sudras, to serve meekly even these (other) three castes.”[viii]

It is unfortunate that our ignorance (specially the ignorance of the parliamentary parties opposed to Hindutva) about the anti-national, anti-egalitarian and dehumanised ideological moorings of the RSS has provided RSS and its supporters enough space to confuse the nationalist and patriotic Indian discourse. An organisation which is fully committed to overthrow a democratic-secular polity is allowed to rule India.

It presents the most lethal danger to our nation and unless patriotic Indians rise up to unmask and challenge its criminal designs we will not need any foreign criminal gang to undo India. Hindutva organisations are surely working over-time to fulfil this unholy task but patriotic people of India, loyal to a democratic-secular polity and with sound knowledge of the nefarious designs of RSS will not let them succeed.

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) like any other fascist organisation thrives on a sense of intrigue. It is through a carefully constructed theory of conspiracies that it attempts to legitimise its own rather nefarious agenda. The purpose is to attack (with misinformation, violence and intimidation) and then attempt to turn, in the public mind, the victims into the perpetrators.

The recent case of state repression of the students of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) especially its Student Union president, Kanhaiyya Kumar who has been booked for sedition underlines this character of the ideology of the RSS, once again.

A peaceful gathering of a section of students at the campus to protest on the third anniversary of the hanging of Afzal Guru has been falsely depicted as having raised the slogan of ‘Pakistan Zindabad’. It is true that some slogans were raised but not in support of Pakistan. Describing this as an act of sedition, Kanhaiyya Kumar was booked and many other students are being investigated.

It is clear by looking at the footage of the meeting that this particular slogan ('Pakistan Zindabad') was in fact raised by the members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidharthi Parishad (ABVP) to enable an easy ‘anti-national’ tag be attached to the meeting. These ABVP members were present there, ostensibly protesting against this meeting that was taking place.

Both the RSS and its offshoots are known to have used such tactics of deceit. These have been well-documented within their own framework, in the documents of the RSS itself.

The central publication house of the RSS, the Suruchi Prakashan, Delhi, published a book in 1997, titled Param Vaibhav Ke Path Par (On the Road to Great Glory) authored by Sadanand Damodar Sapre, a senior RSS functionary. This book contained details of more than 40 organisations created by the RSS for different tasks but more importantly it described how many of these organisations are run in a clandestine manner to promote hidden agendas.

Dr Rajendra Prasad: “I am told that RSS people have a plan of creating trouble. They have got a number of men dressed as Muslims and looking like Muslims who are to create trouble with the Hindus by attacking them and thus inciting the Hindus. Similarly there will be some Hindus among them who will attack Muslims and thus incite Muslims. The result of this kind of trouble amongst the Hindus and Muslims will be to create a conflagration.”

This publication reveals that the whole network runs like a well-organised mafia through its subsidiaries and satellites. There has always been a conscious attempt to create confusion about its various fronts which then provides the RSS with the easy opportunity (option) to dissociate with any of these on occasion, for political convenience.

For instance it used the Hindu Jagaran Manch (HJM) for attacking the Christians in the late 1990s. When, however, public opinion, media and even Parliament seemed to turn against this outfit for obvious reasons, the RSS denied any relationship with the HJM. However, as admitted in this publication, the Hindu Jagaran Manch was created by the RSS itself. To quote:

“From the point of view of Hindu awakening this kind of forum(s) [like Hindu Jagran Manch] at present are active in 17 states with different names like ‘Hindu Manch’ in Delhi, ‘Hindu Munani’ in Tamilnadu, ‘Hinduekjut’ in Maharashtra. These are forums, not associations or organisations, that’s why it is not required to have membership, registration and elections.”[i]

It is clear that such organisations with no record of membership, no registration and no internal elections are created by the RSS. Such an organisational model provides an opportunity to the RSS to (periodically, when it is politically expedient) disown any individual or organization.

True to its ideological roots and nature, the RSS takes recourse to the theory of conspiracies, often. Read about this disclosure in Param Vaibhav Ke Path Par that relates to a case in Delhi immediately after Partition:

“Swayamsevaks had posed to have adopted Musalman [sic] religion in order to gain the confidence of Delhi Muslim League for knowing their conspiracies.”[ii] [ Emphasis added]

What these Swayamsevaks, impersonating as Muslims, on the eve of Independence were doing was made clear by none other than Dr. Rajendra Prasad who later became first President of the Indian Republic. In a letter to the first Home Minister of India, Sardar Patel, he wrote on March 14, 1948,

“I am told that RSS people have a plan of creating trouble. They have got a number of men dressed as Muslims and looking like Muslims who are to create trouble with the Hindus by attacking them and thus inciting the Hindus. Similarly there will be some Hindus among them who will attack Muslims and thus incite Muslims. The result of this kind of trouble amongst the Hindus and Muslims will be to create a conflagration.”[iii]

The following passage from the autobiography of the first Home Secretary of UP, Rajeshwar Dayal, ICS, clearly shows the sinister and criminal designs of the RSS to organise a pogrom against Muslims in western Uttar Pradesh (the largest province in the Indian Union) and thus break the unity of the country just on the eve of Independence.

“I must record an episode of a very grave nature when the procrastination and indecision of the UP Cabinet led to dire consequences. When communal tension was still at fever pitch, the Deputy Inspector General of Police of the WesternRange, a very seasoned and capable officer, B. B. L. Jaitley, arrived at my house in great secrecy. He was accompanied by two of his officers who brought with them two large steel trunks securely locked. When the trunks were opened, they revealed incontrovertible evidence of a dastardly conspiracy to create a communal holocaust throughout the Western districts of the province. The trunks were crammed with blueprints of great accuracy and professionalism of every town and village in that vast area, prominently marking out the Muslim localities and habitations. There were also detailed instructions regarding access to the various locations, and other matters which amply revealed the sinister purport.

Greatly alarmed by those revelations, I immediately took the police party to the Premier’s [chief minister’s] house. There, in a closed room, Jaitley gave a full report of his discovery, backed by all the evidence contained in the steel trunks. Timely raids conducted on the premises of the RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) had brought the massive conspiracy to light. The whole plot had been concerted under the direction and supervision of the Supremo of the organization himself. Both Jaitley and I pressed for the immediate arrest of the prime accused, Shri Golwalkar, who was still in the area.

Pantji [G. B. Pant] could not but accept the evidence of his eyes and ears and expressed deep concern. But instead of agreeing to the immediate arrest of the ringleader as we had hoped, and as Kidwai would have done, he asked for the matter to be placed for consideration by the Cabinet at its next meeting. It was no doubt a matter of political delicacy as the roots of the RSS had gone deep into the body politic. There were also other political compulsions, as RSS sympathizers, both covert and overt, were to be found in the Congress Party itself and even in the Cabinet. It was no secret that the presiding officer of the Upper House, Atma Govind Kher, was himself an adherent and his sons were openly members of the RSS.

At the Cabinet meeting there was the usual procrastination and much irrelevant talk. The fact that the police had unearthed a conspiracy which would have set the whole province in flames and that the officers concerned deserved warm commendation hardly seemed to figure in the discussion. What ultimately emerged was that a letter should be issued to Shri Golwalkar pointing out the contents and nature of the evidence which had been gathered and demanding an explanation thereof. At my insistence, such a letter if it were to be sent, should be issued by the Premier himself to carry greater weight. Panditji asked me to prepare a draft, which I did in imitation of his own characteristic style. The letter was to be delivered forthwith and two police officers were assigned for the purpose.

Golwalkar, however, had been tipped off and he was nowhere to be found in the area. He was tracked down southwards but he managed to elude the couriers in pursuit. This infructuous chase continued from place to place and weeks passed.

Came January 30, 1948 when the Mahatma, that supreme apostle of peace, fell to a bullet fired by an RSS fanatic. The tragic episode left me sick at heart.”[iv]

It is also well-documented, both in the archives of the Court and other official archives how Hindutva organisations conspired to kill Gandhiji. The conspiratorial modus operandi of the RSS was visible in the demolition of Babri Mosque in 1992 when despite assurances to the government of India and the highest court of justice, the Supreme Court it succeeded in its criminal plan. The Gujarat genocide of 2002 was another instance when it conspired to execute its blood thirsty game.

Now with a government of the RSS, for the RSS and by the RSS, this juggernaut of conspirators, armed with state power, is in full action mode. It can be checked only by a united response from Indians who are committed to a democratic-secular India.
