Just three months after 11 people were convicted by a special court in Ramgarh for lynching Alimuddin Ansari for allegedly carrying beef in his van, and less than a week after two men were lynched for allegedly stealing buffaloes in Godda, another death in a beef related case in Ramgarh makes one wonder if Jharkhand is following in Rajasthan’s footsteps and becoming a ‘Gautankwad’ or cow-vigilantism hotbed.

The body of 45 year old Tauhid Ansari was discovered at noon on June 19, 2018. Soon a video of it went viral. According to police officers from the Rajrappa police station under whose jurisdiction the incident occurred, Ansari’s bike met with an accident at around 9 am and that impact caused some meat to fall out of the bike’s back compartment. Three hours later, Tauhid’s body was recovered from a spot at short distance from the accident spot.

Naushad Alam, Tauhid’s younger brother and an advocate in the Ramgarh Civil Court recalls, “Tauhid left our village Karma for Chitarpur at about 5 in the morning for some work. I was in court and found out about his death only after I saw the video of his body being discovered. I recognised his red shirt.” Naushad who is also a BJP party worker also clarifies that the bike discovered at the accident spot was indeed Tauhid’s despite contradictory media reports. “The bike bearing the registration number JH02-H-5722 belonged to Tauhid. It had been purchased based on an agreement from the previous owner,” he says.

There was a three hour interval between the occurrence of the accident and the discovery of Tauhid’s body. Naushad suspects there was foul play involved. “My fear is that he was not killed in the accident or anywhere near the accident site. I believe he was taken elsewhere where he was killed and his body was later dumped where it was found,” he says. The vehicle that collided with Tauhid’s bike has not been found yet. Naushad fears that the accident may have been orchestrated and the beef angle may have been added to first frame and then murder Tauhid. However, he does not know anyone who would want to do so and insists it couldn’t have been a case of enmity. “He did not have any enemies. I have fought so many cases pro bono for the poor. So it’s not like I have any enemies either,” he says.

However, Naushad fears for the safety of his family. On being asked if they have been threatened he says he cannot speak freely at the moment, but insists, “The family should be given protection. The police should provide us protection.” On the matter of ‘beef’ falling out of the motorbike’s back compartment he says, “Let the scientific tests reveal if the meat was beef.” The police have sent the meat for forensic analysis and the body was sent for a post mortem analysis. Both reports are still awaited.

Tauhid’s father who had earlier filed the police complaint is now ill and Tauhid’s widow, according to Naushad, appears to have suffered a mental breakdown. Naushad is following all developments in the case in a bid to reach the bottom of the matter. Tauhid did odd jobs and is survived by two daughters and a son. Meanwhile, Tauhid’s body has been returned and his last rights will be performed soon.

Mumbai: In the second cow-related hate crime recorded in 2018, two Muslim men were injured when a mob turned violent in Nawalidh village of Koderma district, Jharkhand, on April 17, 2018, on the suspicion that bovine meat had been served at a wedding in the neighbourhood the previous night.

Koderma

This is the 80th cow-related hate crime recorded since 2010, according to an IndiaSpend database that records such violence. The latest attack in Jharkhand–the seventh such incident to be reported from the state–took place in the Domchanch area near the Koderma police station in Koderma district, Jharkhand.

Across India, the state now ranks third, along with Karnataka, which reported the first cow-related hate crime of 2018, and Gujarat, for such violence. Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, with 10 incidents each, reported the most crimes.

In March 2018, nine months after a meat trader was lynched in Ramgarh district, Jharkhand, 11 of 12 accused in the murder were sentenced to life imprisonment, as the Hindu reported on March 21, 2018.

Since 2010–the start of our database–29 persons have been killed and at least 235 persons injured in bovine-related hate crime. Over 53% of the victims in these attacks and 86% of those killed were Muslim, an analysis of the database showed. Most of these–97% of all incidents–have occurred since the Bharatiya Janata Party and Prime Minister Narendra Modi assumed power in May 2014. Only one incident each was reported in 2012 and 2013.

Geographically, from 2012 to date, most cow-related hate crimes–64%, or 51 of 80 incidents–were reported in north India. Since 2015, the attacks spread towards the east and south of the mainland at an increased pace.

Media reports that a BA second-year student was stabbed multiple times on June 1 by a a mob now known as cow vigilantes for not clicking photographs of their protest after they mistook him for a journalist in Gohana town of Haryana’s Sonepat district, according to a Hindustan Times report. The student, Shivam, who is currently struggling for life at a hospital in New Delhi, went to the event with a journalist friend of his and had his friend’s camera in his hand.

Gaurakshak

As has become a pattern, the Gau Raksha Seva Dal had organised the protest demanding sedition charges against Congress workers in Kerala after they slaughtered a cow in public and held ‘beef fests’ on May 27. The Youth Congress workers allegedly slaughtered the cow to protest the central government’s decision banning sale and purchase of cattle from animal markets for slaughter.

Claiming that they mistook Shivam to be a photographer as he had a camera with him and asked him to take photographs of the protest and them handing a memorandum to district officials. After Shivam reportedly refused to do so, it led to an argument, however, bystanders calmed the protesters.

Bent o0n mob violence, post the protest, the gau rakshaks followed Shivam and stabbed him on his chest and stomach with knives. “He was admitted to a local hospital initially but taken to Delhi because of his condition,” police inspector Ajaib Singh told the media.

A 19-year-old, Mohit who is the main suspect in the case, has been arrested and two more suspects, both relatives of Mohit, are on the run. An “attempt to murder” case has been lodged against the three people and the complaint mentions the accused as members of the cow protection group. It is not yet known whether Mohit belongs to a clearly defined dupremacist outfit.

Typically, despite the fact that the three persons were part of the protest, the gau rakshak group has disowned the trio, saying they were troublemakers who joined the protest, the police inspector said.
