Once again, the Delhi-NCR region witnesses another brutal crime against Dalits. According to NewsBeak, a nine-year old Dalit girl was raped and murdered by the landlord of the property she and her family were living at.  The Delhi Police, revealed that the girl had gone missing from her home on December 12 and was allegedly abducted, raped, and murdered by a man who resided in the same area.  The accused has been identified as 52-year-old Sanjeev Rana who was taken into custody on Sunday, December 17.

The child’s parents are both labourers in a factory who resided in a rented accommodation in Ghaziabad. The horrifying incident took place near her home. Her parents revealed that the girl was last seen near her home around 2 pm on that fateful day. It was also observed that she went missing only after she accepted a lift from Rana.

The father of the victim told The Quint that initially they had just thought that she was out playing, but they grew worried as there was no sign of her till night, “I left for work in the morning, while my wife left at around 1:30 pm, taking our two-year-old son with her. My daughter was playing outside when my wife left. But later, I got a call from my neighbour that my daughter was missing. Initially, I thought she had gone to her friend’s place, but there was no sign of her till night.” The father narrated that Rana, accused of the crime, had even offered to search for her when they discovered she was missing. Following this, the child’s family contacted the police on December 12 at around 8:30 pm to report her disappearance.

The accused, Rana, the alleged perpetrator, had been admitted to a hospital after he had had a road accident, and following this accident he confessed to the police after they questioned him.

“He told us he abducted the girl and killed her on December 12. He claimed to have dumped the body in a canal. We have been trying to retrieve it. We are checking the route he took on the day of the crime,” the DCP has stated, according to Outlook India

As of now the body of the  murdered victim is not found,  the Delhi police in the investigation are trying to locate the body in the canal where Rana states that he had allegedly disposed of it. The police have stated, “We are checking entire routes of the accused and the accused will be brought in to search for the victim’s body on Tuesday.” According to The Quint, divers have been deployed to survey the canal.

Meanwhile, Swati Maliwal, the chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), has taken note of the situation and issued a notice to the station house officer of the respective area for a report on the progress of the investigation. The accused so far has been booked by the police on charges of murder, kidnapping and rape under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The victim’s family and neighbours have staged a protest at GT Karnal road. The protesting family members have told The Quint, “No one should ever go through what we did. We need justice. Before that, all I want is for the police to find my daughter’s body so we can perform her last rites.”

A video of a female professor asking a student to exit from the stage after raising a slogan of ‘Jai Shree Ram’ has gone viral and been doing rounds on social media. As per media reports, the said incident took place in ABES Engineering College in Ghaziabad on October 20. The reports provide that the female professor had allegedly asked a student to leave the stage after he chanted the “Jai Shri Ram” slogan ahead of his performance at a cultural fest.

The said video shows that the student on stage chanted the slogan of “Jai Shri Ram” in response to some students in the audience who had shouted the same slogan. After he raises the said slogan, the entire auditorium can then be heard joining in and chanting the slogan in chorus. Pursuant to this, the woman professor can be heard asking the student to leave the stage. An argument ensues where the professor can be heard reasoning with the student that such religious slogans should not be made since it was a cultural event at the college.

The video also shows another professor, identified as Dr. Mamata Gautam, coming to the support of the other professor and asking the student to leave. This viral video then caused an uproar. People on ‘X’ (formerly known as Twitter) took this to be an attack on Hindus and termed the teacher to be a “Hinduphobic”.

The video can be viewed here:

A second video was also uploaded on ‘X’ showed that professor explaining the audience students to not engage in sloganeering at a cultural fest as everyone was there to have a good time.

“We all are here for some cultural event and for some good time, so why there is slogans of Jai Shree Ram, there is no logic to it,” she said, adding, “These programmes can only be successful when you are disciplined. You are sitting at such a premier college and your behaviour should also be such.”

The video can be viewed here:

The attacks on the professors involved were on such a massive scale that Mamata Gautam uploaded a video explaining and clarifying the stance taken by then. In the said video, she can be heard saying that “the ‘Jai Shree Ram’ incident that took place in the college was not as it is being made out to be. Me, my colleagues and the college does not have any issues with the said slogan. The student was arguing too much with my colleague and as the coordinator of Discipline and Culture Committee, we just told the student that he had raised the slogan. There is not much to it.”

Referring to the attacking, Gautam can be heard saying “The religiously motivated comments that are being made against me are bothering me a lot. I am a Sanatani Brahmin. I was born into a Brahmin family. As you are aware that the festival of Navratri is going on. Me and my family are keeping the fast for 9 days. We do not have and will never have any problem with the slogan of ‘Jai Shree Ram’. These remarks being made against me are hurting me a lot and affecting me mentally. If people continue to make such remarks, I will be forced to go to the court.”

She ended the video by one against clarifying her religion. She stated: “There is no discrimination. I am a full sanatani.” She ended the video with a ‘Jai Shree Ram’. Notably, in the background of the video, a home temple can be seen.

The video can be viewed here:

As per the report of English Jagran, following the incident and the video going viral on social media, police had been deployed outside the college to prevent any untoward incident. The director of the college, Dr Sanjay Kumar Singh, had issued a statement provided that an inquiry committee has been formed to probe the matter and that no action will be taken against the students. Meanwhile, right-wing outfit Hindu Raksha Dal President Pinki Chaudhary had announced that he would be visiting the college on Saturday.

A pattern of targeting teachers and professors:

In the recent times, a pattern seemed to have emerged where the statements made by teachers and professors are twisted to give a communal colour, similar to what happened in the aforementioned incident. In the said incident, trollers on ‘X’ are conveniently not sharing the video of the professor giving the rational explanation of her actions and are rather painting her as “hinduphobic”. the incident is used by the extremist Hindutva group to further their narratives of ‘Hindus being in danger’ and then pressurizing the management of the involved college/schools to take action against the involved faculty. This creates an environment of fear amongst the teachers where they have to abide by the ideologies of the majoritarian groups and might have to face consequences if they do not do so. The same pattern had been observed in as many as nine schools in Kolhapur Sangli and neighbouring districts of Maharashtra between the months of June and August, 2023. A deep analysis of the report can be read here.

The infamous hate spewing priest, Yati Narsinghanand Saraswati, has recently uploaded a video on his Facebook account threatening to destroy all mosques in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh.

He openly announced that if any ‘Jihadi’ (militant) comes close to or tries to extract even a brick used to build temples, the consequence would be grave, and that all mosques in Ghaziabad will be extirpated. In the video, one can see many followers and disciples screaming ‘Jai-Jai’ in chorus, validating the virulent idea Yati propagated.

Clad in his typical saffron attire with a garland around his neck, he praises the strength of the Hindu community and how they can never be defeated. While urging the fellow Hindus, Yati also said that jail is like a temple for him and his other fellow sadhus. The reason behind this could be that perhaps he knows what he said amounts to Hate Speech but said it anyway!

Further, he reiterated, “Agar kissi mandir ko hilane ki koshish jihaadiyo ne ki, toh uska itna tagra jawaab denge jiski koi had nahi.” (Translation: If any Islamic militant attempts to destroy our temples, we will respond in a manner that has no limits). The video has already received 20,000 views with comments like “eradicate Islam” “har har Mahadev” (a popular Hindu chant which translates to Lord Shiva everywhere).

After finishing his speech, Yati passed on the mic to one Pinky alias Sher (tiger) alias Bhupendra Tomar who had reportedly admitted to being part of the violence that took place on the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus in January 2020. In an interview given to The Print, he said, “JNU is a hub of communists and we won’t tolerate this. They abuse our religion and our country. Their attitude towards our religion is anti-national. In future, too, we will take the same action in other universities if someone tries to indulge in anti-national activities.”

Before starting his speech, Bhupendra appealed to all Hindu audience members to shout slogans in a manner that is audible to all ka***** (an expletive and slang word used to describe Muslim men) in the vicinity. This was followed by loud chants of “Jai Shri Ram” (long live lord Ram) and “harhar mahadev”. He said he will gouge the eyes of all Muslims who dare destroy any temple. He also appealed to all fellow Hindus to associate themselves with the temples and chant the Hanuman Chalisa. This will increase their strength by four times.

He went on to threaten that if a Muslim even raises his eye towards a temple, his eyes will be gouged. “We are in the state to finish them (the ones who try to destroy temples)”, he added. This event was organised in support of another priest Machchendra Puri, who, according to a Dainik Bhaskar report, was booked for assault after he and his supporters beat a man who was playing music during aarti.

In the almost 9-minute-long video, Machchendra Puri is seen standing next to Yati and Bhupendra where at some point Yati even states that if anybody tries to touch or target Puri, they will not tolerate it.

Such speeches and anti-minority remarks amounts to Hate Speech under various sections of the Indian Penal Code. But till now, the Ghaziabad Police has reportedly not taken any action despite being tagged in several posts to do the same.

This is a deliberate and malicious attempt to outrage and hurt the religious sentiments of a particular community, that goes beyond the limits of free speech permitted by the Constitution. CJP in the past, has approached different authorities like the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITy), National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) and the National Commission for Minorities (NCM) against Yati’s actions. Recently, the NHRC has also registered a case against Narsinghanand for his hate speech against Islam made in April this year, on the complaint filed by Haji Mohd. Sameer Boghani, president of the Madariya Sufi Foundation.

Boghani had told SabrangIndia that he was “concerned and worried” about how the venomous hate speech by self-proclaimed Hindutva Leader, Yati Narsinghanand Saraswati was being normalised. Words like ‘jihadi’ are being generalised normalised and used to refer to Muslims, he said.
