However, trolls did not spare Siraj despite the happy moment. One X user, named Chandan Sharma, even wrote, “its victory of Team India not Allah.”

Another seemingly anonymous user, with a verified account, commented “Allah was not playing  11.”

Another, verified account, going by the Sakshi Sonam commented, “Tum logon ka kaun sa yogdaan tha.”

Another user named Pankaj Yadav commented, “अल्लाह के बंदे खेले ही नहीं मैच में। अल्लाह के बंदे तो पहले ही हार कर अपने देश लौट चुके है। जीतने वाले सारे बंदे भगवान के है। ये जिहाद फैलाना बंद कर दे, वरना एक्स्ट्रा प्लेयर में भी जगह नहीं मिलेगी।” (Allah’s men did not play in the match, they have already lost and returned to their cuntry. The ones who have won are Bhagwan’s men. Stop spreading this jihad, otherwise you won’t even be taken as an extra player.”

In 2023, Siraj and another cricketer Umran Malik were trolled heavily, including by notorious hate speech giver Suresh Chavhanke, for refusing to have tilak applied to their foreheads.

The trolls did not point out that in the video two other cricketers, namely Vikram Rathour and Hari Prasad Mohan had also refused the tilak.

Meanwhile, in similar news, Sabrang India had covered how playing cricket does not just give a Muslim trolling, but how it also resulted in the death of a young Muslim man in  Chikhodara, Anand district, Gujarat, where a young man named Salman Hanifbhai was beaten to death after a game of cricket.

Salman had gone to save his friend, Shoaib who was beaten and attacked by two men. After trying to help, Salman himself was brutally beaten by around twenty men who used bats, sticks, and paddles. On his body were found stab wounds, brutal wounds from beating after his death. Reports have claimed that locals did not like that Muslims were doing well in the local tournament and the fact that several players, in both teams, were Muslims.

AltNews co-founder Mohammad Zubair has received numerous online threats from Hindutva influencers after the site busted fake propaganda about attacks on migrant workers in Tamil Nadu. Of those threatening Zubair is a rightwing columnist Harshil Mehta and former OpIndia editor Ajeet Bharti. “The plan is on. This time he will be totally circumcised so much that he’ll need a pipe to urinate,”  brazenly tweeted Bharti. Some twitter users went several steps further and suggested lone wolf attacks and an “Akhlaq”-like offensive. In 2015, a year and three months after the Modi 1 regime was voted to power, Mohammed Akhlaq was beaten to death by a mob on the suspicion of eating beef in UP’s Dadri district. This is not the first time that Zubair has been the target of abuse by the Hindu right. In June 2022, he was arrested for allegedly “hurting religious sentiments” with a tweet. 

“I am not aware of any death threat, no such information has come to me,” said Bengaluru police commissioner Pratap Reddy to Newslaundry.. “If Zubair approaches us, we will consider giving security based on the case.”

Pratik Sinha, co-founder of Alt News, said that they were talking with their lawyers about what to do. Before this, Zubair tweeted to say that while he largely ignored or laughed off the torrent of abuse he receives, the flurry of tweets by people about “physically harming & finishing me” had increased after Alt News busted fake propaganda about murderous attacks on migrant Bihari workers in Tamil Nadu. Zubair also told the Wire that he had received threats earlier, but this time the threats were angrier and more explicit. 

Over past weeks, several right-wing social media pages, BJP leaders and certain mainstream news channels had falsely claimed that migrant labourers, particularly from Bihar, were being lynched in Tamil Nadu. 

It was not just Zubair but several other fact-checkers, who called these out These fact-checks helped counter the disinformation and also led to criminal cases being filed against Uttar Pradesh BJP spokesperson Prashant Umrao, Hindi newspaper Dainik Bhaskar, right wing website OpIndia’s editor Nupur Sharma and CEO Rahul Roushan, and a few YouTubers and Twitter handles.

Ever since actress and activist Swara Bhaskar announced her marriage to Fahad Ahmad, the state president of Samajwadi Yuvjan Sabha, a youth wing of Samajwadi Party Maharastra, the Hindu Right wing has upped their trolling game. The same outfits and the same people who scream and take oaths to protect their “Hindu daughters” are uttering demeaning words for Swara as she has now chosen to marry a Muslim.

Swara Bhaskar had secretly married political activist Fahad Ahmad in court on January 6, 2023. It was also shared that it was while they were both protesting against the discriminatory Citizenship Amendment Act that these two found love. But, as soon as this news came out, different forms of trolling was then seen on Twitter, ranging from anti-women statements, anti-Muslim statements to character assassinating Swara and bringing in the murder case of Shraddha Walker, wherein her live-in partner had murdered her and then chopped her body into parts.

Swara Bhaskar has already faced her share of trolling for being an opinionated and vocal woman, and for her dynamic roles in movies, but this is a new low.

Many twitter users, belonging to both Hindu and Muslim extremist outfits, tweeted Islamophobic and derogatory tweets that pushed the communal and misinformed narrative that Hindu women who choose to marry Muslim men usually end up dead. Many tweets along the similar lines were seen, with statements such as “congratulations in advance for covering Swara in black tarpaulin.” Fired up by the recent case of Shraddha walker, wherein the man who murdered and chopped her was Muslim, these anti-Muslim tweets can be seen.

Along with Swara Bhaskar, actress Richa Chadha and Rakhi Sawant, who had also recently married Muslim men were made a part of this communally intolerant diatribe. 

While the couple has gotten their marriage registered in Court, presumably under the Special Marriage Act that contains provisions for inter-faith couples, many tweets couple been seen about how Swara, by marrying a Muslim, has no more a Hindu.

Not only men, but also women trolled the couple. People began digging through Swara’s previous tweets hours after she made the announcement and came across one old tweet in which the actor is seen addressing her husband as ‘bhai’ (brother). The now-viral tweet is not particularly old, and it appears that Swara is teasing Fahad, who was already married to her at the time. In the tweet, the actor appears to be calling Fahad ‘bhai’ in gest while wishing him a happy birthday. The tweet reads, “जन्मदिन मुबारक फ़हाद मियाँ! भाई का कॉन्फ़िडेंस बरकरार रहे ?
@FahadZirarAhmad खुश रहो, आबाद रहो.. उम्र हो रही है अब शादी कर लो!
Have a great birthday & a fantastic year dost! (sic).”

A few examples of how the trollers used this friendly tweet to push their communal agenda and portray their sick mentality is as follows:

To make matters worse, Islamic scholars then also gave their unsolicited opinion and said that inter-faith marriages are not accepted in Islam.

It is pertinent to note that these above-mentioned tweets have been posted by handles that have a blue tick, are verified and call themselves journalists, scholars, social workers, authors, etc. are the ones who are tweeting and spreading all this hatred. None of the statements made by the trollers made much sense. In many cultures and tribal belts, even in Maharashtra and Punjab, there are customs concerning marriages were certain family members are allowed to get married.

There is an environment of growing intolerance. Extremists belonging to both Hindu and Muslim communities create a space of non-acceptance and bigotry, adding fuel to the current fire of division and religious fanaticism. The constitutional secular essence of India is found in such stories of love and tolerance, and rising above this hyper-fixation on religious sectarianism.
