Now Members of Parliament bat for Indira Jaising and Anand Grover

In an unprecedented show of support and solidarity, more than 30 members of Parliament have written to the Prime Minister demanding justice for human rights activists Indira Jaising and Anand Grover. They activist couple’s home and offices of their NGO Lawyer’s Collective were raided by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday July 11 in connection with a case of alleged violation of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA).

Signatories include Rajya Sabha MPs P Chidambaram (INC), D Raja (CPI), Anand Sharma (INC), Jairam Ramesh (INC), Kapil Sibal (INC), Jaya Bachchan (SP), Sanjay Singh (AAP), Shanta Chhetri (AITC), and many more. Interestingly, they all belong to opposition parties. In their strongly worded letter they say, “We, the undersigned individuals strongly condemn the raids at the homes and offices of senior advocates Indira Jaising and Anand Grover this morning by the CBI.” They add, “This, latest in a long line of coercive tactics against Ms Jaising and Mr Grover, is nothing short of a brute show of intimidation as well as gross abuse of power.” They have urged the Prime Minister to act swiftly and put an end to this “coercion and intimidation.”

Civil Society and Liberals rally behind Indira Jaising and Anand Grover

In wake of the raids by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on the offices of senior advocates and human rights defenders Indira Jaising and Anand Grover, liberal politicians and members of civil society have shown support for the duo.

The dynamic duo has received words of support and encouragement from senior advocate Prashant Bhushan, activist Kavita Krishnan, Bhim Army Chief Chandrashekhar Azad, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, CPI (M) leader Sitaram Yechuri, Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani, senior journalist Rajdeep Sardesai and many others. They have all expressed shock at the manner in which Jaising and Grover have been targeted and urged that the law of the land be upheld.

Advocate Prashant Bhushan tweeted saying, “CBI raids at residence of Indira Jaisingh & Anand Grover in case of alleges misuse of foreign funding to their NGO is a clear act of Vendetta. Registration of cases & raids by Govt agencies has now become the way of govt to harass & intimidate opponents.”

Meanwhile, Arvind Kejriwal tweeted, “I strongly condemn CBI raids on well known senior advocates @IJaising and Mr Anand Grover. Let the law take its own course but subjecting veterans who have all through their lives fought for upholding the rule of law & Constitutional values is clear vendetta.”

CPI (M) leader Sitaram Yechuri also minced no words:

Senior journalist Rajdeep Sardesai also expressed concerns about how two of the country’s “finest public spirited lawyers who have fought all their lives against the powerful are being raided by CBI.”

Bhim Army Chief Chandrashekhar Azad also tweeted in solidarity with Jaising and Grover:

Both Kavita Krishnan and Jignesh Mevani dubbed this an undeclared emergency.

Women’s Organisation Condemns the Targeting of Senior Lawyers

AIDWA condemns the targeting of Human Rights activists and senior lawyers Indira Jaising and Anand Grover and their organization “Lawyers’ Collective” through a petition filed by a so called NGO “Lawyers Voice” where credentials are totally unknown.

Ms. Indira Jaising had recently, like so many eminent citizens and lawyers and women’s rights organizations and groups been critical of the procedure adopted by the Supreme Court and the “In-House Committee” of the Supreme Court in dealing with the case of Sexual Harassment filed by an ex-employee of the Supreme Court against the Chief Justice of India. The timing of this petition immediately thereafter asking for a criminal case to be filed against them for some alleged violation of “FCRA” directly in the Supreme Court seems to suggest that they are being targeted for this. We feel that no notice should have been issued in this matter and urge the Supreme Court to immediately dismiss the petition.
