Dr. Pathan who is an Oncologist based in the Haji Ali area, was trying to book a cab to attend a wedding in Nashik.

“I chose to ignore and not respond to the provocation by the driver. It reflects a growing intolerance in society. I did not take the ride. It is crucial for us to promote understanding and acceptance among diverse communities.” Dr Pathan told the Free Press Journal.

Narrating the incident, the doctor explained that he had requested the cab driver to pick him up from Haji Ali one afternoon. However, to his surprise, the driver called himself a ‘Rambhakt’ and stated that he would confirm bookings only if Dr. Pathan agreed to chant ‘Jai Shree Ram’. The doctor expressed that while he has no objections to anyone saying ‘Jai Shree Ram’ or any other chants, but concluded that it should not be forced upon others. Furthermore, Dr Pathan decided not to respond to the driver and instead reported the incident through the support options provided by the InDrive mobile app after which the ride was cancelled. According to him, InDrive executives called him and rendered an apology for the incidents and promised to take action against the cab driver. They also stated that they will conduct training sessions and workshops for drivers that will help promote tolerance and respect for all faiths.

Similarly, earlier this week an auto driver from the Muslim community was harassed and forced to chant Jai Sri Ram in Mumbai city, according to the Free Press Journal. A man named Mohamed Sajid Mohamed Yasin Khan was attacked by a group of five people, who pushed him to the ground and forced him to say Jai Sri Ram. Khan also discovered later that the 2000 rupees he kept in his rickshaw was also stolen while he was being assaulted. The incident took place in Mumbra. The Indian Express reported an official who said, “He was in a rickshaw stand queue waiting for passengers when the five accused allegedly went and started beating him. They pushed him on the floor and after insulting him, they forced him to say Jai Shree Ram.”

Khan reported the incident to the police and filed a complaint in the Daigar police station. The  police in Thane have officially lodged a case against the five of the accused. Some of the charges include Section 395 for dacoity, Section 295-A for intentional acts causing religious sentiments to be outraged, and Section 427 for causing damage amounting to fifty rupees. One of the five accused has been arrested, while the police continues to look for the other four.

According to a recent report by Sabrang India, it has been observed that communally charged incidents targeting Muslims in the form of vigilante effects, hate speeches, provocations have been on a steady rise in the past few months.

Maharashtra in the year 2023 witnessed  about fifty Hindutva rallies within just three months. Several of these rallies, which had many leaders and politicians making inflammatory statements, were also held in the Mira Road area, which saw violence and vandalism against the resident Muslim community in late January this year.

“They first slapped my face, and eventually began punching and kicking me. Then they began forcing me to say ‘Jai Shri Ram’” Irfan shared in an interview with NewsLaundry.

They continued beating him only after Irfan’s friends, Awez and Rohan, called the park’s security personnel came and tried to save him.

Afraid for his life and fearful that the situation would worsen, Irfan did not to file a police complaint and immediately made to leave for his village. Although Irfan could not identify who his attackers were, he pointed out that a neighbour named Aniket had previously inquired about his whereabouts as he headed to the park.

The incident was shot on camera by one of the attackers and uploaded with a song in the background that is reportedly called ‘Kattar Hindi, badla to lenge.’

The Hate Detectors account on the social media site X also shared a video of a group of saffron clad men assaulting a Muslim fruit vendor. This incident was also reportedly recorded by the same individuals, as per a report by Times of India, and each reportedly occurred within a span of 30 minutes of each other. 

NewsLaundry reported that the cart vendor named, Sayyed Muddasheer, stated that they came and overturned his cart after which they asked him to chant Jai Sri Ram which he refused.

The Parbhani police has reportedly registered an FIR for the two separate incidents against the same group of people. One of the arrested is reportedly a 20 year old nursing student who is a local resident native to Parbhani named Vishal Nagre. The police have booked the suspects on charges of rioting, unlawful assembly, deliberate and malicious acts, insult to religious belief and others.

Earlier, on January 22nd, one Muslim man was forced off his bike and made to chant Jai Sri Ram in Mumbai near Mira Road. According to the video, the injured have been taken to the hospital.

Former MLA from Byculla, AIMIM’s Waris Pathan has also shared a video of the incident. In the post on X, he has reportedly also shared a young girl was also molested by these goons at the incident and she is reportedly a minor of 15 years. He shared that MIM’s associated had taken the injured to the hospital after they helped diffuse the situation. Pathan has blamed provocative speeches given by BJP leaders. He has urged the Police Commissioner and Chief Minister of Maharashtra to take the issue seriously.

Around 11.30 PM on Saturday night, two men riding a motorcycle began harassing a Muslim couple waiting at a bus stop, insisting they chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’. One of the men also allegedly flashed the woman. However, this enraged bystanders who then thrashed the accused and handed them over to police.  

“When one of the men flashed before the woman, the onlookers intervened and called the police. The two men were handed over to Kotwali police. We arrested them after recording the couple’s statement,” Chauthmal Verma, station house officer of Alwar Mahila Thana, told Hindustan Times.

The accused have been identified as Vansh Bhardwaj (23) and Surendra Mohan Bhatia (32). The police also conducted a medical examination of the accused, which revealed Bhatia was in a drunken state during the incident. Alwar police on Sunday arrested them under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 354 A (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 386 (extortion by putting a person in fear of death or grievous hurt ), 295 (injuring or defiling place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class) and 509. The complaint was filed at a women’s police station and the accused were produced before a judge and remanded to judicial custody.
