In an attempt to discredit the Marina protests and justify police action against the protesters, the government of TN has put forward several theories, one of them being that anti-national elements had entered the protests. As proof, we were shown an image of a man on a bike with a poster of Osama bin Laden. TN CM O Pannerselvam even mentioned this on the floor of the house.

TNIE now reports that it has now turned out that the man was not a part of the jallikattu protests, and that it was from a previous protest organized by an Islamic group. The man from Otteri claims that the picture was taken in December, much before the Marina violence.

S Salaludeen, a 23-year-old working at a chicken stall in Chennai, confirmed to The New Indian Express that it was him in the picture, but he claimed that he had nothing to do with the protests in Marina beach and that he was working on January 23. He added that there is a CCTV camera in his shop that would prove that he was there from 9am to 5pm.

He said that the picture was taken in the first week of December, when the state unit of the Islamic organization, Indian National League, organized a protest against Centre for criticizing fundamentalist preacher Zakir Naik. “We wanted to send a strong message to the Centre against their actions. So along with a friend, a 27-year-old from Vyasarpadi, I decided to stick a picture of bin Laden on the bike,” he told The New Indian Express.

The Osama bin Laden picture had created a controversy, and it was said that anti-nationals had hijacked the jallikattu protest. It was also circulated on social media widely. Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and the police had highlighted the picture and raised security concerns. Panneerselvam also showed the picture in the assembly.

The police have however not filed any case against him.

हलचल भरा आंदोलन जो कि शांतिपूर्ण रहा है। लेकिन तमिलनाडु के एक वरिष्ठ भाजपा पदाधिकारी ने कथित तौर पर इसमे धार्मिक संप्रदाय फैलाने की कोशिश की है।

एच राजा, जिनकी ट्विटर बायो में लिखा हैं कि वह भारतीय जनता पार्टी के राष्ट्रीय सचिव है अपने कड़े ट्वीट में धार्मिक संप्रदाय को फैलाते हुए एक छात्र की कथित मौत के लिए  मुसलमानों को दोषी ठहराया।

उन्होंने लिखा है, “छात्र विग्नेश वासुदेवन पर बेरहमी से मुसलमानों द्वारा हमला किया गया था जल्लीकट्टू आंदोलन में भाग लेने वाले मुसलमानों ने राष्ट्रीय ध्वज पकड़ने पर हमला किया। मैं इसकी निंदा करता हूं। ”

जैसी कि उम्मीद थी उनके ट्वीट से खूब प्रतिक्रिया आई। लेकिन वो अपने मकसद में नाकामयाब हो गए जब तमिल वासियों ने भाजपा नेता की सांप्रदायिकता फैलाने वाले ट्वीट की कड़ी निंदा की।

भाजपा ने तमिलनाडु में चुनावी लाभ निकालने के लिए कथित तौर पर सांप्रदायिक घृणा फैलाने की कोशिश की है जहां पार्टी को अपनी पार्टी के लिए लंबा संघर्ष करना पड़ा है।

पिछले साल जून में,कुछ भाजपा समर्थकों ने गलत तरीके से चेन्नई तकनीकी विशेषज्ञ स्वाति की नृशंस हत्या के लिए एक मुस्लिम को दोष देने वाला सोशल मीडिया पर उन्माद फैलाया था। उन लोगों में से बेहद खतरनाक नकली प्रचार के आधार पर ट्वीट को पोस्ट किया था जो कि प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी और पूर्व बॉलीवुड गायक अभिजीत द्वारा फॉलो था।

Amidst raging agitation, which has remarkably been peaceful, a senior BJP functionary from Tamil Nadu tweeted allegedly to communalise a movement, which has so far received overwhelming supports from people belonging to every faith in the state.
H Raja, whose Twitter bio says he’s a national secretary of the BJP, desperately sought to create a communal tension through his tweet, which blamed Muslims for an alleged death of a student.

He wrote, “Student Vignesh vasudevan was brutally attacked by muslims participating in Jallikattu agitation for holding National flag. I condemn this.”

As expected, his tweet evoked unprecedented reactions from social media users. But to his utter shock, almost everyone condemned the politician from the saffron party for communalising an agitation that has been bereft of any religious overtone up until now.

BJP has been accused of resorting to fake propaganda by inciting communal hatred allegedly to extract electoral mileage in Tamil Nadu, where the party has long struggled to gain grounds.

In June last year, some BJP supporters had attempted to create social media frenzy by wrongly blaming a Muslim for the brutal murder of Chennai techie, Swathi. Among those who had posted extremely dangerous tweets based on fake propaganda were a Twitter troll followed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former Bollywood singer, Abhijeet.

When challenged, Abhijeet had abused and issued threats to journalists including Janta Ka Reporter’s editor-in-chief, Rifat Jawaid. He was later arrested by Mumbai Police.

Swathi’s murder accused, arrested by Chennai Police was later identified as Ram Kumar.

The BJP’s performance in the last year’s assembly elections was quite abysmal with most of its candidates having lost their deposits and the party had failed to even open its account in the 235 seats assembly.
