Houses at the Kukrail River Front area were demolished one early morning on June 10th. Crowds of people stood in anguish at various spots and watched as houses fell one after another. Around ten JCB machines and six Pokeland machines had arrived at Akbarnagar the previous night.

The operation was reportedly led by Dr. Indramani Tripathi, of the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA). The authorities were accompanied by police officers who conducted a march through the narrow lanes of Akbarnagar, and telling residents via loudspeaker to move into their new homes in Basantkunj and vacate their current residences.

As per Amar Ujala, the LDA has displayed details on a hoarding about the families who have been allotted one or two houses on public hoardings.

According to the Indian Express, the eviction notice served to the residents in December 2023 designated the houses at Akbarnagar as ‘illegal’ and ‘encroachments’ by the standards of the National Green Tribunal (NGT). The eviction drive is reportedly part of the Lucknow administration’s attempt to change the area into a more ‘developed’ area. As per a report in The Citizen, the demolition is part of the Goti River Front Project which is aimed at beautifying the banks of the river. The demolitions in Akbarnagar are part of this beautifying project.

In December, the Allahabad High Court had issued a one month stay on the demolition drive and had directed the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) to allow residents ‘reasonable’ amount of time to apply for the rehabilitation scheme.

As per a report in Mooknayak, bulldozers had undertaken to demolish some shops in December 21, 2023 itself. The report states that the BJP government in the state is working on construction in the area which has designated about 1200 homes and 102 shops for demolition. Electricity and water facilities were stopped in the area last winter after the demolition notices came, but were restarted once the Allahabad High Court’s judgement arrived. Mooknayak’s report states that over 25,000 people will be affected by the demolitions. According to Hindustan Times, the LDA has allotted houses to those who would be displaced under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. The Akbarnagar area in Lucknow is said to have a considerable number of Muslim residents. The residents of the area are mostly daily wage earners.

The BJP, and in particular the Yogi Adityanath government in UP, has faced heavy criticism for demolishing Muslims properties over the past two years. They have been called out for reportedly selecting Muslim properties as a means of targeted ‘punishment.’ As per a report by the HLRN, 1.5 lakh houses were felled by demolition drives between 2022 and 2023. This had led to the displacement of over 7.4 lakh people.

The arrival of Lucknow doctors at Firozabad Medical College has provided some relief in terms of man-power to address the rising number of Dengue cases in the region, a healthcare worker told SabrangIndia. The district has been in the media spotlight due to steadily rising numbers of deaths due to Dengue.

The disease includes symptoms like fever, chills, body ache, headache, dehydration, rapid decline in platelet count and stomach ache. The virus is spread due to mosquito bites. According to Live Hindustan, 67 deaths were recorded on Friday of which a majority were children. Around 200 people showing symptoms of the disease have approached hospitals as per local news media. Around 100-150 of these patients include young children. Some hospitals that took in many young patients barred other people from entering the building.

“The biggest issue is the dirt brought in by flood water and heavy rain,” said Firozabad resident Vipin, who also reported symptoms of fever. He said that while city folk were suffering the most from Dengue, the lack of hygiene had helped the disease reach rural areas as well. Similar cases are also being reported in Etah, Mathura and Mainpuri. Anganwadi workers across Uttar Pradesh have complained of growing viral cases in villages and unhygienic surroundings due to flood water.

Earlier, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath transferred the Chief Medical Officer in Firozabad following a visit to the district hospital. On Friday, Hindustan Times reported that further three doctors were suspended. These include a primary health centre’s medical officer-in-charge Dr Girish Srivastava, medical officer-in-charge Dr Saurabh Prakash, public health expert Dr Ruchi Yadav.

While these administrative changes are made, the Lucknow team, consisting of experts from Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has collected samples from sick children and larvae from affected regions. Bodies of those who died due to the disease have been sent to Lucknow and the Pune-based National Institute of Virology (NIV) for further investigation, as per a report in the New Indian Express.

However, experts are also speculating whether the disease may be caused by creatures other than mosquitoes. For example, Scrub Typhus is a bacterial infection caused by the Orientia tsutsugamushi bacteria and infects humans after being bitten by infected larval mites.

The Allahabad High Court Bench of Justices Siddhartha Varma and Ajit Kumar had recently observed that the entire medical system in the state of Uttar Pradesh pertaining to the smaller cities and villages can only be called ‘Ram Bharose’ (at the mercy of God). However, even this does not seem to have made the Uttar Pradesh government do a course correction.

This sarkari apathy seems to have also emboldened groups of right wing workers who have taken the law into their hands, and decided to crack the whip on individuals who are working on issues of public health and are raising awareness of the ongoing health crisis in the most populated state. According to a report in The Wire, a group of social activists campaigning for the ‘Right to Public Health’ was attacked in Lucknow on Monday.

Things took an ugly turn and the mob suddenly attacked the activists, after verbally abusing them, reported The Wire. A woman activist has also alleged that a mobster twisted her hand and abused her. However when the police arrived, they detained the three activists! The activists were taken to Hasanganj police post where they were interrogated for nearly three hours. The attackers are reportedly from the right wing and accused the activists of being ‘urban naxals’, a derogatory term made popular by so called ‘celebrities’ of the right wing.

According to the report a public campaign titled ‘Right to Public Health’ was launched in Uttar Pradesh by two groups: Naujawan Bharat Sabha and Stri Mukti League. Their demands included “nationalisation of health services as well as food and shelter for the poor during the entire lockdown.” Three social activists, Anupam, Avinash and Rupa were pasting posters and distributing pamphlets raising awareness about the campaign in the Hasanganj locality on Monday morning, when they were allegedly confronted by a group of locals. As per the report, the locals accused the activists of “misleading the public” and said they were pasting “pro-Muslim” posters near a temple. The locals continued to fuel hate and made the accusations communal. Even when the activists tried to reason with them and tell them about what the Right to Public Health was, showing them public interest information pamphlets, the mood did not change, stated the report.

Citizen’s groups, and some lawyers stood up in support of the detained  activists, who were eventually released. However, police said there was no assault on the social workers! The Wire quoted the Hasanganj police station house officer, Yashkant Singh as saying, “We arrested three activists from Panna Lal Road for violating lockdown protocols and pasting posters illegally”.

Activist Rupa told the reporter that a man “twisted her hand” while snatching pamphlets from her; she added that she had already emailed senior police officers for registering a first information report against the miscreants. However, the police said no FIR was registered against anyone so far in this incident.

Anupam, one of the activists, however alleged that the mob were “sympathisers of the right wing as they were annoyed with our questioning on mishandling of the Covid-19 situation and the devastating condition of rural areas by the Bharatiya Janata Party government. They beat us as we were pasting posters featuring shortage of oxygen,” stated the news report. The other activist Avinash told The Wire, “The mob was saying that ‘everything is fine in the country, and there is no shortage of anything, neither in the country nor in the state. You people are falsely defaming the Modi and Yogi government’. While they were kicking us, they were calling us ‘urban naxals’.”  The activists alleged that a local woman corporator was also a part of the mob and said the activists were “anti-Modi-Yogi people”.

On Saturday evening, CJP received word that Uttar Pradesh student leader Pooja Shukla may have been abducted. The 23 year old firebrand activist who had raised black flags against Chief Minister Adityanath in June last year, was picked up from outside a friend’s house in Lucknow at about 4:30 pm. She was released and dropped back at the same spot shortly after 9 pm. What we discovered after she was released, is that she had been picked up, beaten and intimidated by police personnel!

Pooja Shukla was abducted by UP police at around 4.30 pm as she was just walking out of a friend’s house in the Polytechnic area in Gomtinagar. According to Shukla, two police vans loaded with about twenty police men and women, some in uniform, some in plainclothes came to detain her. “As they were forcibly detaining me, they kept thrashing me. The male police officers instructed the women constables to pull my hair and thrash me,  ‘Phone chheeno S##@i se, baal nocho, (snatch her phone, pull her hair) they said’” informed a bruised and exhausted Pooja Shukla as she was let off at around 9.10 pm today after she was practically kidnapped by the police!

As she was picked up, her phone was snatched away from her and remained unanswerable even after several calls. Her worried friends kept trying to track her even as she was being taken to a deserted area. After reaching a certain spot, which was completely deserted, the police told her that they were planning to just leave her there. But a defiant Shukla refused to step out of the vehicle. “I told them, drop me back to the same place where you picked me” she said.

Meanwhile, the women police officers kept having a ‘good time’ with Pooja’s phone. Initially they didn’t answer calls, later they started proxy answering on Pooja’s behalf. Every ten minutes their narrative of where Pooja was, kept changing. To one caller they said that Pooja was at the mall, while to another caller they said she was taking care of her friend Sadaf’s baby who was unwell. To another caller, the lady constable said, “I am her mother and Pooja is sitting right next to me.” To their shock and dismay, the caller turned out to be Pooja’s father who informed them that Pooja’s mother was, in fact, sitting right in front of him. But the police woman did not lose a beat and casually responded saying, “Oh, I was joking, she is roaming around the mall.”

This was the most callous, careless and irresponsible manner in which a 23 year old girl was ‘picked up’ and “mentally tortured” for about five hours even as the friends and family remained extremely tensed and kept making multiple rounds of police stations in the vicinity, as also kept calling higher ranking officers. “We don’t know anything about the arrest of any such girl. We are right now busy with preparations for PM’s visit” was the standard response from most of them.

As Pooja returned, she recounted the horror, “They kept spewing horrible and obscene swear words at me.” Taunting at her on her stand for students rights they said, “Oh, you want publicity? You want media attention? You have been posting too much. Refrain from writing anything on social media otherwise the consequences won’t be to your liking!”

As they wouldn’t let her answer her calls, Pooja made an excuse that she needed to urgently use a washroom. When they stopped at a “Sulabh Shauchalaya” (public toilet), she made a quick call using the toilet attendant’s phone and informed her friends that it appears that she has been abducted and is being taken to some unknown location. After mentally torturing her for close to five hours and giving her some thrashing initially, they finally let her off only when Pooja started collapsing from fatigue and stress.

While dropping her, they said, “We will keep you inside [the jail] for so long that you won’t be able to come out. We are yet to impose NSA on you. We haven’t forgotten what happened at the [Lucknow] University.”

Sadaf Jafar, a teacher and supporter of the strike, who initially reported about this abduction, asked, “If none of the police officers whom we called knew if she was arrested, under whose orders was she picked up in this manner?”

The 23 year old student leader had gone on a hunger strike when the Vice Chancellor (VC) of the Lucknow University (LU) withheld her entrance exam results, barring her from taking admission in a master’s course. Subsequently, Shukla along with fellow protesters was brutalised by UP police, lathi-charged, her clothes torn, though there was FIR lodged against her. Due to the police torture she had fainted and suffered hypotension and dehydration. During this time, police also forced her to break her fast, stop the strike and take back her demands. Since then there has been constant threat to her life because of her peaceful movement against the irregularities in admission procedure of LU.

Interestingly this abduction and intimidation took place while PM Modi is on a visit to Lucknow to “attend a programme marking the third anniversary of three key urban development initiatives.” It’s shameful that on the same day that the PM is visiting, a student leader involved in a peaceful movement demanding basic students’ rights was abducted in this manner. It appears that the police were trying to prevent any protests that could take place on the PM’s visit given Pooja’s previous attempt to wave black flags at UP CM Adityanath in June 2017. It is also disturbing to note that just a few hours ago, police had manhandled some women for waving black flags at an event to welcome BJP Chief Amit Shah. What is the difference between police men and paid henchmen, when abducting, intimidating and brutalising a young girl is how they hope to curb voices of dissent?

We have just received information that student leader Pooja Shukla has been abducted from outside Polytechnic college, Gomtinagar in Lucknow UP.

Pooja Shukla was taken by unidentified men to an undisclosed location and doesn’t have her mobile phone with her. She managed to get someone else’s phone and quickly informed an acquaintance that she has been abducted. “I am feeling very scared. I don’t know who these people are, they don’t look like policemen”, she informed on the phone. She has said that she has been kept in a dark room and doesn’t know what is going to happen.

This is one more assault on this student leader from Lucknow University. She had gone on a hunger strike when the VC of the university withheld her entrance exam results, barring her from taking admission in a master’s course.

Subsequently, Pooja Shukla along with fellow protesters was brutalised by UP police, lathi-charged, her clothes torn, though there was FIR lodged against her. Due to the police torture she had fainted and suffered hypotension and dehydration. During this time, police also forced her to break her fast, stop the strike and take back her demands.

Sadaf Jafar, a teacher and supporter of the strike had highlighted how the VC of the varsity was behaving in a threatening manner, “The VC had warned Pooja that he carries two guns and can shoot her anytime he wants. There was no security for her at nights and the VC had the Chhatrasangh room locked and the only toilet in the area was also locked.”

Since then there has been constant threat to her life because of her peaceful movement against the irregularities in admission procedure of LU.

On the other hand, PM Modi is on a visit to Lucknow to “take part to attend a programme marking the anniversary marking the third anniversary of three key urban development initiatives.”

It’s shameful that on the same day that the PM is visiting, a student leader involved in a peaceful movement demanding basic students’ rights is abducted in this manner.

UP state government needs to urgently look into this and find out about Pooja Shukla’s whereabouts!

No one is being allowed to enter the village. Some media personnel who had gone were held and their video footages were deleted by the police.

The health of Bhim Army leader, Chandrashekhar Azad ‘Ravan’ continues to deteriorate as am autocratic UP administration refuses even basis dignity and care in jail. He was suffering from typhoid while in jail but was not given any sort of medication and neither was proper food given to him inside the jail. Chandrasekhar asked comrades to continue the movement. He told that the government can’t stop the movement against Brahmanism by keeping one person in jail. To protest against slapping of NSA, women have sat on hunger strike inSabbirpur.

Meanwhile, on Saturday,  delegation of AISA including JNUSU Vice President Simone Zoya Khan, Com.Shashi Tripathy, Com.Rama Naga, Com.Ikrar, Com.Shahzad Ahmad and Com.Madhurima Kundu met Chandrashekhar Azad “Ravan” in Meerut Medical Hospital, while he was being taken back to the Trauma Centre. Police have shutdown slaughterhouses and illegal butcher shops across numerous cities in UP, including Ghazipur, Gorakhpur, Gonda, Kannauj, Hardoi, Kanpur, Varanasi, Jaunpur and Azamgarh

Meat Shop Burned

Within days of UP’s newly-elected chief minister Yogi Adityanath declaring a crackdown on slaughterhouses, three butcher shops were gutted in Hathras town even as the police have swung into action across the state. Arson by cow vigilantes has not been ruled out in the burning down of the Hathras shops.

A front-page news published in the Urdu daily Inquilab has reported that police have shutdown slaughterhouses and illegal butcher shops across numerous cities in UP, including Ghazipur, Gorakhpur, Gonda, Kannauj, Hardoi, Kanpur, Varanasi, Jaunpur and Azamgarh. Being targeted are not only slaughter houses and butcher shops selling buffalo meat but even those selling mutton and chicken, according to reports.

Meanwhile a news portal reports that illegal slaughter houses and meat shops were sealed by the police in Lucknow, the state capital.

Here below is an English translation of the Inquilab report:

No sooner has Yogi Adityanath taken charge of UP after a thumping BJP victory in the Assembly polls, that he has targeted the food habits of the state’s minorities. In his very first directive as chief minister, he has ordered a clampdown on illegal slaughter houses across the state. And the police have been swift in enforcing the directive. Reports from different cities indicate that the police crackdown on slaughter houses and butcher shops has created an atmosphere of fear and terror among those engaged in the business, Muslims and non-Muslims alike.

In Ghazipur, one slaughter house and several shops have reportedly been sealed by the administration. The crackdown has continued for the second successive day in Gorakhpur with one slaughter house and many shops being shut down. Locals have complained that even shops selling mutton, chicken and fish are not being spared.

Slaughter of cows and its progeny have been banned in UP but those engaged in the buffalo meat business too are being targeted. The new CM reportedly wants to ban the slaughter of buffaloes as well.

The administration claims that its actions are only against illegal slaughter houses and butcher shops where the licenses have expired.

In Gonda, 12 shops have been shut down in the meat market. Similar action has been taken against one shop in Kannauj, four in Hardoi, three in Kanpur, three shops and one slaughter house in Maunath Bhanjan.

In Varanasi, the parliamentary constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the crackdown has continued for the third successive day. In Jaunpur, 12 shops have been sealed and orders have been issued for the shutdown of slaughter houses in the city’s vicinity. In Azamgarh, too, several shops have been ordered shut.

Following the shutdown of all slaughter houses in Gorakhpur, the Qureshi community demonstrated before the district collector’s office on Wednesday. They threatened to take to the streets unless a solution was found to restore their means of livelihood.

The strict action launched by the administration has generated uncertainty and fear among butchers who trade only in mutton. Meanwhile, taking advantage of the situation, poultry traders have increased the price of chicken.
