Gurgaon’s Sector 57 mosque was vandalised, set on fire and its deputy imam murdered by a mob amidst reports of tension prevailing in Haryana’s Mewat after blatant provocation by a Hindutvawaadi  procession that reportedly caused the flare-up. Toll in Haryana violence rises to five, curfew imposed in Nuh and internet services suspended in Sohna, Pataudi and Manesar areas. Police and administration are holding meetings with prominent members of both communities to ensure peace, said Police.

Authorities on Tuesday, August 1 imposed a curfew in Haryana’s Nuh district where two home guards were killed and at least 15 others injured including policemen following violence that erupted over an attempt to stop a Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) procession. Reports of arms distribution programmes by the VHP and Bajrang Dal since July 31 have been coming in. Among the injured, Hodal Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sajjan Singh was shot in the head and an inspector in the stomach.

Meanwhile unrelenting provocations by the VHP and Bajrang Dal continued in the first half of Tuesday.

Media sources also reported that the mosque was attacked at 12:30 am last night by a large armed mob which fired on the mosque and then set it on fire. The chief imam of the mosque was away to his village last night. But the naib-imam or deputy imam, who would lead prayers in his absence, was assaulted, stabbed 13 times with swords, etc. and his throat slit before he was killed. Sources at the hospital the two were taken to – W Pratiksha Hospital – confirmed to the media that one of the victims was brought dead, with multiple stab wounds in his chest.

Another person present in the premises was also badly beaten up and shot in the knee. He is presently in the ICU.  The Sector 57 mosque is the only mosque on a government-allocated land in the planned urban developed area in Gurugram The Hindu had reported in 2021, it “caters to almost half of the city’s municipal area spread across south and east zones and a large section of the floating population commuting to the Millennium City daily for work”.

The attackers have been identified and security around shrines has been tightened, according to the DCP of Gurugram East. Meanwhile, the Haryana Government has sought 20 companies of the Rapid Action Force from the Centre for a week to maintain the law and order situation in Nuh district.

How did the violence begin?

Reports of two home guards being killed and at least 15 people, including several policemen, were injured on Monday as protesters in Haryana’s Nuh district tried to stop a Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) procession. Shots were fired, stones pelted and cars set on fire, officials said. There were also reports that Monu Manesar, a cow vigilante booked earlier for the murder of two Muslim men whose charred bodies were found in Bhiwani district in February, was supposed to join the procession. The vigilante, however, told PTI that he did not participate on the advice of the VHP, which feared that his presence would create tension.

The Union home ministry is dispatching 15 companies of central forces to Haryana as violence also erupted in Sohna in the neighbouring Gurgaon district, adjacent to Delhi.

According to the police, the VHP’s Brij Mandal Jalabhishek Yatra was stopped by a group of young men near Nuh’s Khedla Mod and stones were pelted at the procession. Cars were then set ablaze. People in the procession also hurled stones back at the youths who had stopped them, reports said. Later, many took refuge in a nearby temple as police tried to evacuate them to safety. Incidentally, the yatra was flagged off from Gurgaon’s Civil Lines by BJP district president Gargi Kakkar. A police contingent was deployed with the procession.

According to some claims, the trigger for the clash was an objectionable video posted on social media by a Bajrang Dal activist in Ballabhgarh.

As news of the clash in Muslim-dominated Nuh spread, protesters in Sohna pelted stones and set ablaze four vehicles and a shop belonging to people from that community. Protesters there blocked a road for hours.

About 2,500 men, women and children at a Shiva temple in Nuh were evacuated by the police, Haryana home minister Anil Vij said. The evacuees apparently included devotees and those who had taken shelter there as the two sides clashed.

Late at night, Nuh authorities said the situation was “under control”. Representatives from both communities held a meeting in which officials and local leaders too took part. Another meeting was slated for Tuesday morning, they said.

Afzal Ahmed, an MLA from Nuh, on Tuesday, alleged the incident was a planned act of violence, reported India Today.

“A planned act of violence has been carried out. In the past, there have been trips, but nothing like this ever happened,” Ahmed said. “Provocation was deliberately done by uploading videos on social media,” the MLA added.

Meanwhile, an alert was sounded in Rajasthan’s Bharatpur district following violence in Nuh. Superintendent of Police, Bharatpur, Mridul Kachchawa told PTI that the vigil was intensified in the district and social media was being monitored.

All check posts in areas sharing the border with Haryana were being manned, he said.Educational institutions were closed on Tuesday in Gurugram, Faridabad and Palwal districts as a precautionary measure.

Tuesday morning, August 1,  Bajrang Dal’s provocations

Even as police claimed that the tensions were returning to normal Hindutwa Watch reported provocations by Bajrang Dal. An 11 am video quotes these objectionable lines, “ Bhiwani, Haryana Bajrang Dal organized a rally where participants shouted slogans calling for violence against Muslims. “Jab Mulle kaate jaayenge, Ram Ram Chillaayenge (When ‘Mulle’—a derogatory word used for Muslims—would be chopped off, they would cry Ram Ram).”

An hour earlier, 10 a.m. reports of a Muslim driver, Ibrahim being beaten up were shared.

Yesterday, July 31, the provocations become clear. At 9 a.m. today this report comes in:

The Vishwa Parishad Parishad-Bajrang Dal procession to Mewat region that resulted in violence was led by notorious far-right leaders, including cow vigilantes. One group was led by Rahul Dhillon alias Rahul Boxer who runs a gang & owns heavy weaponry. Here is his testimony:

Between 8-9 a.m., Bittu Bajrangi, a senior Bajrang Dal leader in Haryana and a history sheeter, did a Facebook live before heading to Mewat, challenging Muslims living in region to face his gang.

Clearly the administration and police have their work cut out for them. The question is will they act against these self styled vigilantes who enjoy political impunity?

New Delhi: The Rajasthan police has named Bajrang Dal leader Monu Manesar and 20 others in the double murder of two Muslim men in Haryana on cow smuggling suspicions in mid-February, several reports say.

The horrific killing of both Junaid and Nasir had led to countrywide outrage and propelled Manesar, who already had a huge following on social media as a Hindutva leader espousing violence against Muslims, into media headlines. Amidst the outrage, YouTube announced that Manesar’s channel had been “indefinitely suspended” from its “YouTube Partner Program,” which meant that he could no longer make money from the hate videos he posts.

Junaid and Nasir were cousins and lived in Ghatmeeka village of Rajasthan. After the ghastly killings in neighbouring Haryana, protests took place for weeks afterwards, calling for justice. The two were allegedly attacked and abducted by a mob that later set them ablaze, alive while they were inside their car, after accusations of cow smuggling were made against them.

The two men were killed at Bhiwani, under the jurisdiction of Haryana Police, who were accused of going light on Manesar. Hindutva groups also mobilised across Haryana in support of the alleged kingpin, Monu Manesar, and issued threats to police against arresting him. Three of the other accused in the Haryana Police’s investigation into the case – Rinku Saini, Lokesh Singla and Shrikant – are noted police informers.

On Sunday, May 21, police in Rajasthan – the state which was home to Junaid and Nasir – announced that they had named 21 people as accused in the first information report.

“All of them are accused of destroying evidence and providing financial help and shelter as well as guiding others to abscond,” Bharatpur superintendent of police (SP) Shyam Singh said, according to the Hindustan Times.

The Instagram account @teamMonuManesar proudly welcomed their Gau Raksha Dal leader back into the foray of cow vigilantism a few days ago. Monu Manesar was a suspect in the killings of Junaid and Nasir from Rajasthan whose charred bodies were found in a burnt vehicle in Haryana on February 16. Junaid and Nasir were killed on suspicion of cow slaughter.

He was touted to be the main accused who orchestrated the murders. However, soon after the news of the murders broke out, Manesar was absconding and remained in hiding for a while on March 27 he made a comeback on social media. He is back to doing what he is known for, criminal intimidation and assault of truck drivers who are found transporting cattle in the state. His name was also dropped from the list of suspects in the Junaid-Nasir murder case.

On Saturday, Rajasthan police arrested two more accused in the case namely, Monu Rana and Monu alia Gogi. Notices have also been issued to Haryana Gauraksha Dal’s Vice President and some co-workers for being involved in this crime.

Before Manesar officially made a comeback, the page was posting content in support of Manesar akin to the Maha panchayats that were held in small villages of Haryana, where the Rajasthan police were threatened by Gauraksha Dal members against entering Manesar’s house or questioning his family. Many videos were uploaded to support him, with captions like “Sanatanis are proud of Monu Manesar” and so on.

From March 27, his videos have started appearing on this account again, so it appears he has surfaced out of hiding.

On April 6, this video was posted with a voiceover, where Manesar was seen in the frame with some other men, threatening that he is back and the camera was also focused on a rifle kept on a table in front of him.

Another video was posted last week, showing  how the Gaurakshaks had caught an alleged cow smuggler and a picture of the man, bruised on his face was also displayed, along with their infamous motto “Jab tab todenge nahi tab tak chhodenge nahi (We will not spare you until we break your bones)”.

Nasir and Junaid

In India, the cries for justice, are becoming louder and longer! They come from different segments of society and particularly from those who continue to be exploited and excluded! These cries are heart-rending: anyone with an iota of conscience will hear them! The sad and tragic reality is that these cries will remain unheard; those who need to hear these cries and to respond to them, have deadened their ears and hardened their hearts!

Junaid and Nasir cry for justice! These two Muslim men were allegedly kidnapped, lynched, and set ablaze by a Hindutva mob in Haryana’s Bhiwani district on February 16. They were residents of Gopalgarh village in Rajasthan’s Bharatpur. The incident happened 100 kilometers away from their village, and the Hindutva group had accused the deceased Muslim men of cow smuggling.  Junaid and Nasir were apparently abducted from the forests of Piruka and taken them to Barwas village in Bhiwani, where they were burned alive. Family members also said that they were killed by members of the Hindutva outfit Bajrang Dal, and that the Bajrang Dal leader Monu Manesar was behind the gruesome killing. Though Manesar and some others have been arrested, there are others on the street demanding they be released immediately and providing legitimacy to their heinous crime.

Darshan Solanki cries for justice! This eighteen-year Dalit student, was studying at the IIT in Mumbai. Originally from Ahmedabad, his father, Rameshbhai, works as a plumber and his mother, Tarlikaben, as a domestic worker. On February 12, Darshan apparently committed suicide!  He did not leave any note! However, most of his fellow students and others who knew him, have gone on record saying that he faced severe discrimination and harassment because of his caste background. Many regard it as an ‘institutional murder’. It was just three months since he had entered the portals of India’s premier educational institution. The death of Darshan a Dalit is not a one-off case. There are many more!

Ashaben (name changed) cries for justice! She is still a minor, a 17-year-old Adivasi from Jharkhand. She was hired as a domestic worker by a well-off couple who abused and ill-treated her for the five-months she lived with them. On being rescued she says“They hit me with sticks, rope… they hit me with a hot iron tong and used a blade to brand marks on my arm and lips. She would burn paper and light a matchstick and poke me with them… On one occasion, they tried to strangle me and threatened to kill me, I was given only one meal to eat at night, a small bowl of rice, and often ate leftover food from the dustbin since I was hungry for long periods… Often, I slept on the floor in the drawing room… without any clothes. She tore the clothes that I had brought along. He disrobed me and hit me with a stick on my private parts.” There are millions of Ashabens in the country today! Their employers get away with this abuse because of their wealth, their status, proximity to the powerful and of course, lack of accountability to anyone!

The victim -survivors of the Gujarat Carnage of 2002 cry for justice! In a few days from now (February 27/28) it will be yet another anniversary of those infamous days in Gujarat! It was undoubtedly, the blackest chapter in post-independent India. Thanks to the painstaking efforts and the relentless pursuit of justice by several individuals and groups, in accompanying the victim-survivors: justice has been delivered in some instances. The truth however is that those responsible, the masterminds, the kingpins have still not been brought to book – despite authentic and incontrovertible evidence to prove their direct involvement and even complicity in those heinous crimes which engulfed Gujarat for week after week those terrible times! They still roam the streets with impunity and have manipulatively covered themselves with the cloak of immunity! Can the world ever forget the suffering and trauma of Bilkis Bano, Zakhia Jafri, Rupa Mody and hundreds of others who have lost their loved ones? Like the holocaust, during the Nazi regime, the Gujarat Carnage of 2002 will forever be etched in the memory of humankind, it will always remain on the radar -until perhaps the cries for justice are heard!

Bilkis Bano cries for justice! Yes, for herself, for her loved ones and for all women who are victims of a heartless, brutal, patriarchal society! Today she is unable to accept the ignominy that the eleven perpetrators of that unacceptable violence have granted remission from their prison sentences and are scot-free. In pain she says, “All the 4 men of my family were killed brutally. The women were stripped naked and raped by many men. They caught me top. My 3-year-old daughter, Saleha, was in my arms. They snatched her and threw her into the air with all their might. My heart broke as her little head shattered on the rocks. Four men caught me by the arms and legs and many others entered me one by one. When satisfying their lust, they kicked me and beat my head with a rod. Assuming that I was dead they threw me into the bushes. Four or five hours later I regained my consciousness. I searched for some rags to cover my body, but couldn’t find any. I spent a day and a half on a hilltop without food or water. I longed for death. Finally, I managed to find a tribal colony. Declaring myself as a Hindu I sought shelter there. The men who attacked us used foul language; I can’t repeat it ever. In front of me they killed my mother, sister and 12 other relatives. While raping and killing us, they were shouting sexual abuses. I could not even tell them that I was five months pregnant because their feet were on my mouth and neck. I have known the men who raped me for many years. We sold them milk. They were our customers. If they had any shame, they would not have done this to me. How can I forgive them?”

Migrant workers cry for justice! There are an estimated 400 million people work in India’s informal sector, on low daily wages and with no contract, pension, paid holidays or health benefits and above all, poor working conditions. The vast majority of them are migrant workers; they are scattered all over the country, who speak different languages. Migrant workers normally cannot defend themselves. When they go to another state, they don’t even speak the local language. No one inspects the premises to check working conditions are safe. They don’t even feature in the records of the local state government. They are invisible.  The powerful images of migrant workers suffering when lockdown was announced in 2020 will remain etched in one’s memory forever. Besides, in the height of the COVID pandemic the Government passed the four labour codes, which most people feel are violative of the rights of workers and favour the employers particularly, the corporate sector!

Christians cry for justice! It has never been as bad as this for this miniscule minority! Christians are attacked and persecuted with frightening regularity; Churches and sacred objects are vandalised and desecrated; false cases are foisted on Christian pastors and those assembled for prayer. On 19 February, more than 15,000 Christians assembled at the Jantar Mantar in New Delhi for a prayerful and peaceful protest! Speaker after speaker lambasted the current regime for their open instigation to their ilk to harass, intimidate and attack the Christians. Complete legitimacy is given to fascist outfits like the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, the Bajrang Dal and the Akhil Bhartiya Vidya Parishad (ABVP)- the student wing of the Sangh Parivar, to storm Christian institutions demanding that Hindu gods and goddesses be enshrined and even venerated in Christian institutions!  On 20 February, such an incident took place at St Mary’s School, Amreli Gujarat! The goons hounded and harassed the Principal, staff and students for most of the day. Neither the Government Educational authorities nor the local police, think it fit to halt the goons in their steps. In several other instances, Sangh Parivar outfits have been threatening and browbeating Christians, with absolutely false allegations like ‘forced conversions!’

Minorities cry for justice! Christians yes, but on a much larger scale, the Muslims are demonised, denigrated and discriminated against. The classic examples in recent years are the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), The National Register of Citizenship (NRC), the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A with regard to Kashmir’s special Constitutional status, the so-called ‘anti-conversion’ laws in several states – are all designed and directed towards the systematic targeting of the minorities in the country. There is much more: what minorities and other vulnerable groups eat, wear, see and read has become the bane of several from the majority community. Livelihoods of minorities are destroyed; Government employment is not given to someone from a minority community – even if the person meets the required competence and has the necessary qualifications. Venomous hate speeches against the minorities have become the order of the day. Those who spew them, do so with gay abandon- because they know that no one will touch them!

Voters cry for justice! In the run-up to the Karnataka Assembly elections, thousands of eligible voters, mainly Christians and Muslims, find their names mysteriously missing from the electoral rolls. Their names have been deleted. This is a travesty of justice. Elections are also due in three North- eastern states too. One has witnessed in almost every recent election- how the real issues of the people: their livelihood, employment opportunities, food security, environmental justice, habitat are bypassed and they are cleverly polarised on religious, ethnic and caste issues. Voters are coerced /threatened to vote for a particular party/candidate. The recent elections in Gujarat were a sham on Democracy; mafia of the ruling regime took away the voting ids (EPIC) from several voters prior to the elections and the votes were exercised on their behalf. Some were given money to do so or to vote for a particular candidate/party. Beef and liquor and other ‘gifts’ were freely distributed. Selected EVMs were manipulated before and also after the elections!

Human Rights defenders cry for justice! Thanks to those who have had the courage to stick their necks out for the poor, exploited and other vulnerable sections of society – that reality is still on the canvass!  Many human rights defenders are still paying the price for their courageous and selfless deeds. The likes of Vernon Gonsalves, Arun Ferreira and others are still languishing in jail, in the Bhima- Koregaon conspiracy case. The struggle to prove the innocence of Fr Stan Swamy, who was institutionally murdered on 5 July 2021, still continues. Teesta Setalvad, R.B.  Sreekumar and Sanjiv Bhatt are hounded and harassed, with fabricated cases foisted on them. It is not easy for them and for their families, the wheels of justice indeed move extremely and painfully slowly. They however are resolute, determined to fight for the cause of justice – till the very end!

Freedom of the press, of speech and expression cherishers, cry for justice! In a country which is dominated by ‘godified’ media – it is not easy to speak truth to power! On February 2, journalist Siddique Kappan was released on bail after spending 846 days (28 months) in jail on being released on from a Lucknow prison on Kappan told the media that he had no idea why he was implicated wrongly in a case and jailed. The fact however was that he was on his way to Hathras in UP where a young Dalit girl was gang-raped by the powerful belonging to the ruling regime. Any media house ( be it print or electronic) if it takes on the Government – are denied Government advertisements( revenue) and have the ED , the CBI, Income-tax , NIA and other statutory bodies ( who have become pliable instruments in the hands of a vindictive regime) breathing on them , raiding them and creating untold suffering on them. The raids on the BBC offices in Mumbai and Delhi recently are a classic example of this. A free press is sine qua non in a democracy – and world leaders and Governments have taken on India on this score. Besides the banning of the BBC film on Modi- which is accurate, authentic, objective after faultless research is clearly an example of how the Government wants to throttle freedom of speech and expression. A churlish attitude of a fascist regime that is too frightened to face the truth!

Today India cries for justice! Junaid and Nassir, Darshan and Ashaben, the victim survivors of the Gujarat Carnage of 2002: Bilkis Bano, Rupa Mody and Zakhia Jafri; the migrants and labourers, the minorities: Muslims, Christians and others; human rights defenders: Vernon (Gonsalves), Arun (Fereira), Teesta (Setalvad), (RB) Sreekumar, Sanjiv (Bhatt) and many others; voters and those who believe in the freedom of speech and expression. There are many more crying: the fisherfolk of Kerala, those who have been displaced by megaprojects and the mining mafia; those who are concerned about the ecology and cry for environmental justice; the LGTBQIA community; the small farmers and land-holders; the small investors who have fallen prey to a corrupt regime which has been hijacked by crony capitalists like Adani. There are many more; the list is endless! Martin Luther King Jr. once famously said, that, injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. ” Injustice today abounds in India! Until such time, that the cause of justice is served and made real to every segment of society, the cries for justice will continue to grow shriller!

But is anybody listening?

Junaid Nasir

The embers of the double murder of the two Muslim men from Rajasthan allegedly involving Bajrang Dal leader Monu Manesar are fast spreading. From calls for support for the accused to obstructing the police from doing the investigation to threatening the police, this case has seen it all.

Rajasthan Police released a list of 8 persons identified as accused in the case and Monu’s name is missing from the list. This is questionable since Monu was one of the initial suspects in the case considering he is the leader of cow vigilantes in Haryana and any such cow vigilantism would not have occurred without his cognizance.

Villagers protest

Now, the villagers of Ghatmeeka village where the deceased hailed from are staging a protest as no arrests have been made in the case after the one arrest of Rinku Saini. In the video they called for banning Bajrang Dal and to sentence the culprits of Junaid and Nasir to death.

The family of Junaid and Nasir have alleged that they are being pressured to accept Rs. 15 lakh as compensation and a contractual job for a family member.  It has been pointed out that Rs. 50 lakh compensation was given to the family of Kanhaiya lal (a tailor who was murdered after allegedly sharing a post in support of BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma); even government jobs were offered to his sons.

Support for Monu Manesar

On the flip side, people rose in support of Monu Manesar who is believed to be one of the suspects in the case. His supporters refuse to believe that Monu could have been involved in killing anyone. They say that Monu is a revolutionary and if cows were not being killed in the country then we would not need a Monu Mensar. One man said, “Har ghar se Monu niklega (There will be a Monu from every house)”

A gathering organised in support of Monu, in Hathin, Palwal in Haryana warned Mewat (a muslim majority area) that just like Hanuman burned down Lanka, Mewat will also face similar consequences. The speaker said that the society is with Monu.

While Rinku Saini has been arrested and is in custody 8 other accused have been identified. Accused Anil and Shrikant are residents of Nuh. While Kalu Kaithal, Monu Rana Bhiwani, Vikas Jind, Shashikant Karnal, Gogi belong to Bhiwani. However, the name of Monu Manesar is conspicuously missing from the list of accused. Is it a result of the pressure from the right wing groups rallying in support of Monu? The mahapanchayat held in Manesar clearly said that if Rajasthan Police comes to Manesar to arrest Monu or harass others, they will not go back on their legs.

During the Haryana Budget session, opposition MLAs raised the Junaid-Nasir case and raised questions on involvement of the police as well as Monu in the murder.

Hindu Mahapanchayat

“The police will not be able to walk back on their feet,” is a threat being issued to Rajasthan Police doing their job of nabbing culprits in the double murder of Muslim men whose charred bodies were found in a burnt vehicle in Haryana. A Hindu mahapanchayat was held in Baba Bhishma Temple, Manesar, Haryana, by Gau Rakshak Dal on Tuesday. The person addressing the meeting said, “we respect the police but if in this false case the Rajasthan police, they harass our people then Rajasthan police will not walk back on their own feet.”

This threat was issued openly to a big crowd and was even streamed live on social media. The panchayat was held in support of Monu Manesar, the Bajrang Dal leader who is known to have been a perpetrator in many cow vigilantism cases.

Meanwhile, VHP and Bajrang Dal have also rallied in Monu’s support. When they came to know that Rajasthan Police was going to raid his residence, both groups blocked the NH48 highway.

A video surfaced on Monday of the SHO of Gopalgarh police station in Rajasthan’s Bharatpur where he can be seen detailing the incident of the killing of Junaid and Nasir. He has said that the two were beaten mercilessly by cow vigilantes and took them to Haryana Police who refused to take them in custody looking at their condition. He said that one of them had already died due to the assault and the accused then took both of them and put them in the car and set it on fire in the forest on Bhiwani. Monu Rana has been mentioned as one of the accused. The video appears to have been taken stealthily without the knowledge of the SHO.

The developments in the case

Only one FIR has been registered in the case which is in Rajasthan, under sections 143 (unlawful assembly) as well as sections pertaining to kidnapping 365, 367 and 368 as also 302 (murder).

The accused in police custody, Riknu Saini has alleged that they had taken Junaid and Nasir to Ferozepur Jhirka police station, Haryana where the police refused to take them in custody on charges of cow smuggling and sent them away as they feared that the duo would die in custody.

Nuh SP Varun Singla has formed a team to probe the allegations on Haryana police. “To probe the allegations against CIA, Ferozepur Jhirka, a special team has been formed led by ASP Usha Kundu,” he said. “If our men are found involved, action will be taken,” the SP said, reported Quint.

At least three accused, namely Rinku, Lokesh and Shrikant have been working as Haryana police’s informers, The Indian Express reported.

Junaid and Nasir were tortured for several hours to extract information on the sources of cattle and their trafficking operations, Rajasthan Police sources familiar with the ongoing investigation have told The Print. Bharatpur Inspector General of Police (IGP) Gaurav Srivastava told the news portal that 8 accused have been identified as being present at the crime scene, and in total 12 people are involved in the crime.

In a ghastly turn of events in Rajasthan, two Muslim men, Junaid and Nasir who were kidnapped allegedly by members of Bajrang Dal have now found to be dead after their charred bodies were found in a burnt car. It has been alleged that Monu Manesar, Bajrang Dal leader and a man who leads a 50 member team of cow-vigilantes or gau-rakshaks is involved in this crime.

It has been alleged that these men were kidnapped two days ago on suspicion of cow slaughter.

An FIR has been registered at Gopalgarh police station in Bharatpur, Rajasthan against Monu Maneshar, Lokesh, Rinku Saini, Srikant under sections 143 (member of unlawful assembly), 365 (Kidnapping or abducting with intent secretly and wrongfully to confine person), 367 (Kidnapping or abducting in order to subject person to grievous hurt, slavery, etc) and 368 (Wrongfully concealing or keeping in confinement, kidnapped or abducted person) of the IPC. It appears this FIR was filed before their bodies were discovered in the burnt car.

Early this month, Monu Manesar was accused of killing a 21-year-old man, Waris in Nuh, Gurugram. Waris’s family claimed he was killed by gau rakshak led by Monu Manesar however, the police let him off claiming that Wairs met with an accident and died due to internal bleeding.

Reporting on the background of Monu, The Wire wrote, “Often, Monu and his team live-stream the process of chasing a vehicle that is suspected of illegally carrying cattle. After the ‘smugglers’ are nabbed, Monu and his team post several images of the rescued cattle and the accused on their social media pages as ‘conquests’.”
