The vendor has claimed that the name of the shop was Lakshmi because he was renting the shop from a Hindu landlord.

In June 2023, Radha Semwal Dhoni once again made headlines for targeting Muslim traders in a live stream on Facebook. In this livestream, she shot three men casually sipping tea and asked about their names and place of origin. She then went on to ask them to show their identification documents. She snatches their documents from them and shows them to the camera, she also finds a rental certificate, and tried to portray that these men had ‘invaded’ into their villages by renting accommodations from locals for a sum of money and stated, “They have invaded our villages now and for some thousand rupees these villagers are giving them places on rent. Now I will have to complain against them, or we will have to send their bahu-beti with them.”

She singled out one of the men, accusing him of lying about his place of origin. She demanded to see what he was selling and repeatedly asserted that he had lied to her about where he was from. When he attempted to explain, Radha threatened him by saying, “I will push you off this ledge if you lie to me”.

Describing herself as a ‘sanatani’, Semwal has over 31,000 followers on her Instagram page. She has claimed herself as the ‘protector of Uttarakhand which is a land of gods.’ Dhoni is known for proudly sharing videos of her confrontations with minorities on her Facebook profile. Her tactics reportedly include targeting small-scale Muslim traders, particularly hawkers. Additionally, she has uploaded videos claiming that mazaars (Muslim shrines) across Uttarakhand are illegal and have encroached upon government lands. She has consistently made efforts to portray the idea that Hindus are under attack in the country.

Sabrang India reported last year in February 2023, about a disturbing video which surfaced on social media showing the verbal and physical abuse of three Christians in Jhajra district of Dehradun, Uttarakhand. The video shows Radha Semwal Dhoni, a leader of a Hindutva group, verbally abusing and physically assaulting the Christians, accusing them of forcefully converting people.

In the video, Dhoni can be seen thrashing the young men while hurling accusations of religious conversion against them. Semwal was even videotaping the entire incident and did not seem to have any sense of apprehension when the police arrived and enquired about the situation. The police on arrival even seem to question the group of Christians as Semwal tells the officials that the Christians men need to be taken to the police station. Further, she also stated that she will also accompany the police in taking the men to the station and will submit their mobile phones too for evidence.

According to a report by The Quint, she has blamed the BJP for not doing ‘enough.’ She has also, as per the report, attacked Hindus dairy farmers as well, accusing them too of cow slaughter. “Look at this, Hindus are now taking cows to be killed. This isn’t Afghanistan.”

Her tools of harassment include apprehending small-time Muslim traders, especially hawkers, and threatening them, asking them about their whereabouts. She also posts videos about mazaars (Muslim shrines) in Uttarakhand claiming how they are all illegal and have encroached government lands. She recorded this live stream from Garhwal on June 4. She then pointed her camera towards three men who were sipping tea and asked them their names and where they had come from. She then displayed on camera their identification document showing some rental certificate. “They have invaded our villages now and for some thousand rupees these villagers are giving them places on rent. Now I will have to complain against them, or we will have to send their bahu-beti (Daughters and Daughters-in-law) with them.

She then took one of them aside claiming that he lied to her about where he came from. She asked him to show what he was selling and kept claiming that he lied to her about his native place and when he tried to reason with her Radha said, “I will push you off this ledge if you lie to me”. Speaking in a threatening tone, she asked him to show his Aadhar card. On camera she even showed his Aadhar card details and she kept claiming that his Aadhar card was fake (which actually seemed authentic, like any other Aadhar card)

She threatened him to not enter this area to which he responded that she should let him go and that he will never come back here.

She then said, “How dare you come to the mountains. You don’t come here to sell goods, you come here to kidnap girls. If I throw off this ledge nobody will come to know. Aukaat me reh (Stay in your limits). Think ten times before coming here again.”

She then refused to return their Aadhar cards and said, “go to the police station and tell them that Radha has taken your Aadhar cards. Come along with the cops and then take your Aadhar cards back”.

Socio-economic boycott of minorities is one of the important tools of persecution employed by far right and fringe elements to oppress minorities in the country. Last month, Radha Semwal Dhoni, from Uttarakhand shot a video of “nabbing” a Muslim vegetable vendor and harassing him. She points cameras at the Muslim vendors and asks them their names and their Aadhar card as well. She claims that they represent themselves as Hindus and that they have come from Lucknow. In the video she says that the vendors lie and spit on the vegetables and sell these in her area (where she lives). She asks them, “why do you come here? Why don’t you carry an Aadhar card? Do you want to sell us vegetables that have been spat on?” to this, one of the vendors says, “it’s not true, we are not spitting on vegetables”.

Amidst all this, a young man passing by on his bike asked what the commotion was about. He was asking Radha and other women supporting her, why they were harassing these men saying, “there are not selling bombs.” This infuriated Radha as she says, “why are you taking their side? They are outsiders.” To which he says, “don’t talk nonsense”. While the women keep demanding aadhar cards from the vendors.

He argues, “he’s selling vegetables, poor man is trying to earn a livelihood, stop harassing him”. Radha says, “They are saying they are Hindus but they are Muslims. I am not going to buy vegetables from a Muslim”.

Radha Semwal Dhoni is emerging as a far right leader in Uttarakhand as two other incidents in the recent past, reported by CJP and Sabrang India, depict.

On March 2, Hindutva Watch, Twitter account that tracks hate crimes, reported that some men breaking down a Mazar (Muslim shrine) were led by Radha Semwal as they claimed that the shrine was built on state land. On her Facebook profile, she claims that wants a “mazar mukt Uttarakhand (Muslim shrine free Uttarakhand)”.

She has posted the video of men destroying the mazaar  and in the caption, she writes, “show the registry and save your mazaar, Uttarakhand is a land of gods and here only gods will reside.”

Last month, a video of Semwal verbally and physically abusing Christians  (two men and one woman) emerged. Semwal asked them how much money they make for converting people. She slapped the girl and when the man stood up to protect her Semwal heckled him and threatened to hit him. The three can be heard saying that they came to the village to offer tuition and coaching, however Semwal accused them of converting people.

Semwal recorded the incident live for 10 minutes and posted it on social media with the title “धर्मपरिवर्तन कराने वालो का इलाज कर दिया | Radha Semwal Dhoni | Christian Missionaries Exposed”.

She has an active account on Facebook, where she posts anti-minority content. Her account is followed by over 7,000 users.

In one live video she also shows how a good road is built leading up to a Mazaar as she claims, “such nice roads are built for them while people in villages are living in such bad conditions. Through the video, she says, “they have encroached these lands, there are tenements but they are all locked, they are meant for encroachment. They live in their good homes. This land is only kept by them for the future.”
