Relatives of victims of fascism and brigades of Hindu Rashtra, close ranks

fatima Nafees

Fatima Nafess, mother of a JNU student who was reported missing after a clash on campus in 2016 shared a stage with relatives of victims of murders linked to Hindutva groups on Tuesday. At a public meeting to mark the third anniversary of the day her son Najeeb Ahmed was reported missing after a clash with supporters of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, Fatima Nafis demanded justice. Along with Nafis was, Kavitha Lankesh, sister of slain journalist Gauri Lankesh and the wife of Jharkhand mob violence victim Tabrez Ansari.

At the meeting on Jantar Mantar road, Nafis said: “I am fortunate that all of you, my children, have done your duty to stand with me and say that I am not alone. This is a slap in the face of the Sanghis. The only thing the government is scared of are the youths who will be the leaders of tomorrow. Those who call themselves nationalists are selling airports and the railways and destroying institutions. The only people stopping them are the youths.”

Last year, the CBI closed its investigation into the disappearance of Najeeb. Fatima Nafees has however challenged this through a protest petition. BSP MP Danish Ali, author Arundhati Roy, senior Supreme Court advocate Prashant Bhushan, St. Stephen’s College professor Nandita Narain and several student representatives spoke in solidarity with the victims.

Kavitha, sister of Gauri Lankesh who was shot dead in 2017, said: “When (Narendra) Dabholkar was shot dead (in 2013) and (Govind) Pansare was killed (in 2015), I did not care. When (MM) Kalburgi was killed (in 2015) closer to home, it still did not sink in. Finally, when my sister was shot at our doorstep, I understood what fascism and the Hindu Rashtra is.”

The killers of all four rationalists are suspected to be linked. Ansari died in police custody after being assaulted by a mob which made him chant “Jai Shri Ram” in Jharkhand in June this year. His 19-year-old wife Shaista Parveen had a miscarriage during his custody on unproven charges of theft. She said: “I have been running from pillar to post and have come all the way from Jharkhand to demand justice for my husband. Modiji, please grant us justice.”

Ammi, a film by film maker Sunil Kumar and produced by Pedestrian Pictures traces this acute loss, search and longing by Fatima Nafis.  “Our words haven’t reached those who should have heard our voices.”

This is one of the lines spoken in the beginning of Ammi, a documentary film by Sunil Kumar, produced by Pedestrian Pictures, which was recently screened at the YMCA, New Delhi and then last week at the Jawaharlal Nehru University. The essence of this line echoes throughout the film, prompting the viewer to recognise the gaps overlooked by the JNU administration as well as the law while investigating the disappearance of Najeeb Ahmed.

After Najeeb went missing on October 15, 2016, there were many cues left to be explored, from the minutest of forensic details (it is claimed Najeeb’s slippers were found on the staircase along with his phone and wallet in the room), to the fact that he was thrashed by students from the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in his room the other night, or the perplexing events which took place after his last conversation with his mother, Fatima Nafees, who was on her way to meet him.

Ammi is a documentary which attempts to outline the emotional and factual aspects of JNU student Najeeb Ahmed’s disappearance.

  • ·Ammi is named so after his mother Fatima Nafees; the film explores her personal loss as well as the fight she put up against the powers-that-be.
  • ·Despite the resultant feud between students at the university and the sociopolitical uproar, director Sunil Kumar says that Najeeb’s disappearance may not really be as complicated as it seems.

modi and muslims

Aaj tak najeeb Ahmad

rukmini-new

Agitating JNU students today formed a human chain from the administrative block to the Vice-Chancellor’s residence to protest the university administration’s “inaction” in tracing a missing student of the varsity.

JNU students

A student of School of Biotechnology, Najeeb Ahmed, allegedly went missing on last Saturday following a brawl on the campus allegedly with members of ABVP, the night before.

JNU Students Union which had last week kept Vice Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar and other university officials under siege for over 20 hours alleging inaction on the administration’s part, today formed a human chain till VC’s residence.

“Agitating students.. please understand, by shouting slogans and blocking entrance to my residence, we cannot trace Najeeb. We are doing all we can to trace the missing JNU student Najeeb Ahmed. Now, agitating students have blocked entrance to my residence (sic),” he tweeted.

Kumar who had earlier warned students of strict action if they resorted to “unlawful” means of protest also said that it started with a human chain from JNU Admin block but then there was a huge gathering of shouting students at the entrance of his residence.

“Repeated appeals to cooperate and not agitate have fallen on deaf ears of student agitators. This is unfortunate,” he said in another tweet.

JNUSU denied the claim that VC residence was “gheraoed” as it a human chain which culminated at the VC house where Najeeb’s family, friends and two teachers spoke.

“He is lying through his teeth. First of all, he should be tweeting about Najeeb and not about himself. This is a highly megalomaniac tendency, just like Modi, to claim victimhood for himself whereas the only victim is Najeeb. The VC should stop seeking undue sympathy,” JNUSU president Mohit Pandey said.

Earlier in the day, the university released two statements appealing to the JNU community and JNUSU to extend support in finding the missing student.

“The Administration’s concerns are rising by the day with no credible information available about the whereabouts of Najeeb Ahmed. The Vice-Chancellor of JNU is meeting the Police Commissioner on Monday morning in this regard,” a statement from the university said.

It also said, “the ethos, norms, and peaceful methods of resolving issues within the university are at stake because of reported attempts by some vested interests to give it a communal colour”.

The JNU student Najeeb Ahmed continues to be untraceable days after he went missing under mysterious circumstances. Najeeb’s friends alleged that he had disappeared soon after his altercation with some ABVP students.

Najeeb’s mother on Friday made a desperate plea saying that she wanted her son back as she alleged that the administration had been “insensitive” towards her.

“Mujhe mera beta lauta do (Return my son to me). I won’t demand any action against anybody. I just want him back and I will leave once he is handed over to me,” Fatima Nafees told reporters as she broke down sitting outside the JNU’s administration block where students have been agitating since five days.

JNU student

Angry JNU students had staged protests outside the office of the VC, preventing him and other officials from leaving the campus for nearly 20 hours.

The alleged apathy by Delhi Police and more importantly, Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung, has left social media users incensed. Jung was recently declared the administrative head of Delhi government by the Delhi High Court.

The university has been at the receiving end by the central government since February this year, when some left-leaning students were accused of chanting anti-India slogans. The then students’ union president, Kanhaiya Kumar, along with Anirban Bhattacharya and Umar Khalid were arrested on sedition charges and sent to Tihar jail in the national capital.

They were later released on bail after the court’s intervention.

However, the anger against the police crackdown manifested in the subsequent students’ body elections, where the RSS’ student wing, the ABVP, was routed at the hands of a united left front.

Facebook users have now launched #FindNajeeb campaign asking people to build pressure on the administration to find the whereabouts of Najeeb.
Here are some comments;

Celina Mary: Why is there no outrage over how a boy has just vanished into thin air from the JNU campus, after being beaten up by ABVP goons? Where is Najeeb? There needs to be pressure. With each passing day, Najeeb is losing precious time  #FindNajeeb

Ejaz Hussain: Some Students raised Slogans ,The whole Govt Machinery and Media came to action .Now there is alround silence including Shouting Arnab. Whether The life of boy is so cheap.

Gopukrishnan Surendran: The dehumanisation of JNU students has been near-complete. The stage for midnight raids is set. This here is a test dose to gauge the response.

Syed Hassan Kazim: We witness outrage only when the issue is that of fake nationalism, which is mostly used to fool the masses who deserve to be fooled.

Gursaran Singh Anand: Frankly I’ve lost all hope from the present regime. They’ll only follow their agenda doggedly

Santhosh Kottayi: Never underestimate the power of Amitji

JNU Nejeeb Ahmad

Around 500 students assembled at Ganga Dhaba last night in response to the call by the Jawaharlal Nehru Students Union (JNUSU) for a protest march to Vasant Kunj Police Station to register a case against the accused in disappearance of Najeeb Ahmad, a student from School of Biotechnology, JNU. Amidst slogans of ‘We want Justice!’ and placards bearing the declaration ‘We are Najeeb’, the march kicked off with a speech by Mohit Pandey, President, JNUSU, who said, ‘The administration is busy protecting the Right, ignoring the fact that a student has been missing for 3 days. Their press release has the same language as the one released by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) albeit softer. No action has been taken on their part so far, apart from a meeting that was attended, appallingly, by Saurabh Sharma. We, the students of JNU, will show tonight that we are not dependent on the Sanghi administration. We will file an FIR against ABVP members who attacked Najeeb, ourselves.’

The march reached the police station around 11:20 PM, where the students were asked by Mohit to sign the petition for the FIR. The ACP came out around 11:45 PM to address those assembled. Declaring his utmost respect and sympathies for JNU students, he said, ‘All investigations pertaining to the matter are on-going and we ensure time-bound action on it. Your office bearers have constantly been in touch with me, and in return I have directed a big chunk of my office to work on finding Najeeb.’

He added that he had been apprised of Najeeb’s mental health condition by his brother, Mujeeb, and his roommate, Qasim and investigations pertaining to the violent situation on 14th October were going on as well. ‘It is on the basis of solid evidence with me that I say, we have confirmed that he left the campus on the morning of 15th October in a three-wheeler. With regard to our efforts on the case, and because of sensitivity of the matter, only your office bearers will be debriefed, but on daily basis.’ He refused to entertain questions on action against the accused before the FIR was filed. Thereafter, students stayed back to sign the petition.

Earlier in the afternoon students had collected outside the ad block while the JNUSU office bearers and relatives of Najeeb along with an advocate went inside to meet the VC to ask the administration to intervene in the matter.

The JNUSU pamphlet on the recent episode of  group violence in Mahi- Mandvi hostel reads this:
“This is to inform the student community details about the incident which took place on the night of October 14, 2016 in Mahi-Mandavi hostel. There are concerted efforts to communally polarize the campus and spread rumors about the incident. We feel it is pertinent to report the facts of the incident to dispel this rumour mongering being done by ABVP. Around 11:30 pm, some three students went to the room of Najeeb Ahmed, MSc Biotechnology (first year), Room No 106, Mahi Hostel to campaign for hostel elections.

At this time, there was an alleged scuffle which took place between Najeeb and the others. Hearing noise and commotion, when the residents of Mahi reached Room no 106, they witnessed three students assaulting Najeeb. At this juncture, the residents seeing a group of students hauling and coming towards Room No 106, for security concerns, locked Najeeb in his room.

The G4S security personnel have upon reaching the hostel opened the door. Despite the presence of security personnel, some 10-15 students brutally attacked Najeeb. After the attack, the residents again locked Najeeb in the washroom and blocked the entrance, waiting for the Hostel warden to reach.

As the senior warden, Dr Sushil Kumar reached the place, they started moving to the Warden’s office in the ground floor. Despite the presence of the senior warden and G4S security Najeeb was criminally intimidated and communally targeted by the same group of students on the way to the warden’s office. The JNUSU President and other hostel residents who had come to stop the attack were also assaulted by the same 10-15 group of students.

In the Warden’s office, in front of the Senior Warden Dr Sushil Kumar, and the other wardens Dr Somyajit Ray and Dr Arun Srivastava, these group of lumpens threatened Najeeb Ahmed with life and limb. They repeatedly told the warden not to initiate any proceedings and ‘leave Najeeb to them’ and then they would not spare him. They also hurled patriarchal and communal abuses at Najeeb in the presence of the wardens. Despite being present at the site all along the G4S did not collect any video evidence of the assault and the Warden failed to intervene to stop the assaulting students. It is extremely disconcerting that from the morning after the attack, Najeeb Ahmed is missing since 11:00 am, 15/10/2016. A complaint in this regard has been filed in the Vasant Kung Police station by his family members.

JNU Chief Proctor A. P. Dimri faced tough questions from the students

There are repeated efforts to terrorize the student community in the Mahi-Mandavi hostel continuously. On October 16, 2016, the day before yesterday, the wardens meeting, held to prepare a report about the incident was repeatedly disturbed by ABVP lumpens led by Saurabh Sharma. There are serious efforts to communalise the issue and concerted efforts to communally polarize the campus where, on the table of the common room “Muslims are Terrorists” and other deeply offensive statements were written in the hostel. It is shocking to see the apathy of the administration which has not taken any concrete steps despite Najeeb Ahmed missing from the campus premises for more than three days now.

Keeping in mind the seriousness of the incident, the repeated attacks thereafter and Najeeb’s missing, the JNUSU demands that all the accused must be punished strictly. The administration must file a formal complaint with the Delhi Police immediately. All the accused have to be declared out of bound from the hostel to ensure a free and fair trial and speedy justice to be delivered without intimidation of the witnesses. The administration has to initiate further steps to ensure the safety of the students and take necessary steps to stop communal polarization of stakeholders of the university.”

Meanwhile the JNUTA, the Teachers’Association has issued a statement strongly condemning the developments.

“JNUTA expresses its deep concern on the recent incidents of the violence in Mahi-Mandavi Hostel and the fact that one student is missing for more than 48 hours. JNUTA also notes the failure of university Administration in handling of this matter and their inability to carry out their responsibility to safeguard the interest of the university and its members. Symptomatic of this is the singling out the missing student as an accused in its Press Release.

JNUTA demands that the administration take pro-active measures to first ensure the safe return of the student by engaging all agencies to locate the missing student and guarantee his safety. Further, a fair enquiry is demanded to identify those guilty of violence, as any violence has no space in the University. The statement has been issued by professor Ajay Patnaik and Dr Bikramaditya Choudhary (President & Secretary of the association)
The statement issued by the JNU administration has been much criticised.
