This news comes in the wake of a report from Gujarat, where a young Muslim man was mobbed to death during a cricket tournament after some locals were unhappy over too many Muslims being in the cricket teams.

Indian cricket Mohammed Siraj is now being trolled after posting a tweet saying, “Thank you almighty Allah,” following India’s World Cup victory yesterday. Earlier in the morning, he had also shared a photo of the team lifting the trophy along with his tweet. While many congratulated him and the team, several trolls online started trolling him and making derogatory, Islamophobic posts.

The incident took place after India won their second T20 World Cup by defeating South Africa after 17 years on June 30th.

However, trolls did not spare Siraj despite the happy moment. One X user, named Chandan Sharma, even wrote, “its victory of Team India not Allah.”

Another seemingly anonymous user, with a verified account, commented “Allah was not playing  11.”

Another, verified account, going by the Sakshi Sonam commented, “Tum logon ka kaun sa yogdaan tha.”

(Allah’s men did not play in the match, they have already lost and returned to their cuntry. The ones who have won are Bhagwan’s men. Stop spreading this jihad, otherwise you won’t even be taken as an extra player.”

In 2023, Siraj and another cricketer Umran Malik were trolled heavily, including by notorious hate speech giver Suresh Chavhanke, for refusing to have tilak applied to their foreheads.

The trolls did not point out that in the video two other cricketers, namely Vikram Rathour and Hari Prasad Mohan had also refused the tilak.

Meanwhile, in similar news, Sabrang India had covered how playing cricket does not just give a Muslim trolling, but how it also resulted in the death of a young Muslim man in  Chikhodara, Anand district, Gujarat, where a young man named Salman Hanifbhai was beaten to death after a game of cricket.

Salman had gone to save his friend, Shoaib who was beaten and attacked by two men. After trying to help, Salman himself was brutally beaten by around twenty men who used bats, sticks, and paddles. On his body were found stab wounds, brutal wounds from beating after his death. Reports have claimed that locals did not like that Muslims were doing well in the local tournament and the fact that several players, in both teams, were Muslims.

Jammu and Kashmir Police have reportedly registered cases under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) against students of medical colleges who “celebrated” Pakistan’s cricket win over India in the T20 World Cup match that was held on Sunday evening in Dubai.

Soon after the win online trolling targeting Muslims, including Mohammad Shami, the only Muslim player in the indian team, had started. Reports also came in from Punjab, where police had to reach the Bhai Gurdas Institute of Engineering and Technology campus after several Kashmiri students were allegedly assaulted there, soon after the match ended. The college is located in Punjab’s Sangrur area.

Now the students, Hostel wardens and management of the Government Medical College in Karan Nagar, and the Sher E Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences in Soura of Srinagar district, have also been booked under the anti-terror UAPA law, according to a News18 report. Kashmir Inspector General of Police Vijay Kumar told the media that they “filed a first information report against the medical students.” The FIR also reportedly includes charges under Section 505 (statements conducing to public mischief) of the Indian Penal Code against the students at the Government Medical College hostel “who were crying and dancing” after Pakistan won the match. However, it has been reported that the accused persons have been identified yet. News reports quoted an officer of J&K Police saying, “The FIRs have been registered in Soura and Karan Nagar Police Stations of Srinagar city under sections 13 of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and 505 of the Indian Penal Code. Our probe is currently underway. We will set an example through this case.”

According to News18, police officials said they were looking into purported videos of the incident, however, “many of the videos that have surfaced are from 2017.”  Multiple videos reportedly from the Government Medical College (GMC) and Sher E Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) in Srinagar had gone viral in which some students are heard chanting pro Pakistan slogans. It is noteworthy that Union Home Minister Amit Shah was on his three-day visit to Jammu & Kashmir, at that time, his first visit after the abrogation of Article 370.

Meanwhile, in Rajasthan, a teacher identified as Nafeesa Attari, who reportedly expressed her “joy over Pakistan’s T20 win against India,” has been expelled by Neerja Modi School, the private school where she worked. The teacher, who had reportedly put up a WhatsApp status “We wonnn” along with pictures of Pakistani players. According to news reports a parent asked the teacher whether she supported Pakistan, and she  replied ‘Yes’. Soon screenshots of the teacher’s WhatsApp status spread, and the school management expelled her.

This follows the online trolling targeting Muslims, including Mohammad Shami, the only Muslim player in the Indian team started. Even after Sachin Tendulkar himself spoke out in support of Shami, the trolls have continued spreading hate.

Twitter influencers fanning the communal fires included former cricket Virender Sehwag, now a businessman whose dog whistle claimed and taunted that “in parts of India there were firecrackers to celebrate Pakistan ‘s victory.”

Soon after team India was defeated by team Pakistan at the T20 World Cup match on Sunday, online trolling targeting Muslims, including Mohammad Shami, the only Muslim player in the indian team started. However, even more disturbing reports came in from Punjab, where police had to reach the Bhai Gurdas Institute of Engineering and Technology campus after several Kashmiri students were allegedly assaulted there, soon after the match ended. The college is located in Punjab’s Sangrur area.

One of the Kashmiri students shared the video of the ransacking on social media and said, “We were watching the match here. UP waale barged in. We came here to study. We are also Indian. You can see what was done to us. Are we not Indians? So what does Modi say?”

According to some reports, similar incidents were also reported from the Rayat Bahra University in Kharar. Nasir Khuehami, the national spokesperson J&K Students Association, told the media that, “Kashmiri students who were assaulted in Sangrur and Kharar Mohali told me that they were rescued by the locals and other Punjabi students. Students from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana had barged into their rooms, thrashed them and went on a rampage.” Khuehami added that, “All the students are from Rayat Bahra University. They said that they were hit by several goons from Haryana.” He further said, “Punjab Police must ensure the protection of Kashmiri students studying in Punjab. I have spoken to several in Bhai Gurdas Engineering and Technology College. They told me that students from Bihar had hit them, vandalised the rooms, damaged the hall, and even abused and beat up a few others.”

However, according to reports, no police case has been filed as yet but “both sides apologised to each other in front of police and college authorities this morning.” The distressing video clips of broken chairs, upturned beds in their hostel rooms and also injuries sustained the alleged assault on their bodies.

Police officials said, “There are about 90 Kashmiri students and around 30 students from UP and Bihar in the college. Kashmiri students stay in 2 wings of the hostel. While the match was on, the students cheered when Pakistan was hitting runs. They also raised azadi slogans. After the match ended, students from UP and Bihar went inside the rooms of Kashmiri students and had a scuffle with them. Later, the Kashmiri students also had a scuffle with the students from UP and Bihar. The police and college authorities pacified things overnight.”

The Indian Express reported that Swapan Sharma, SSP Sangrur district, said, “Both sides have offered their apologies in front of the police and college authorities today morning. The issue has been settled down.”

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah called this alleged vandalism distressing and asked Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi to “reassure Kashmiri students.”

Meanwhile Twitter influencers have been fanning the communal fires that the massive defeat of team India at the hands of team Pakistan has ignited. A case in point is former cricket Virender Sehwag, who claimed and taunted that “in parts of India there were firecrackers to celebrate Pakistan ‘s victory. Achha they must have been celebrating victory of cricket. Toh, what’s the harm in fireworks on Diwali. Hypocrisy kyun, Saara gyaan tab hi yaad aata hai.”

Then there one Dr. Monika Langeh, who claims to be “Honoured and Blessed to be followed by Hon’ble PM @narendramodi”, shared that “MBBS and PG students of SKIMS Medical college Srinagar, Kashmir. They are celebrating the victory of Paki$tan over India” calling them “traitors” and claimed she had faced “this behaviour of Mu$lims of Kashmir since College Time. They are pursuing free MBBS degree from GoI.”

With lakhs following them online, such messages only empower the troll and mobs to unleash violence offline, as was seen in Punjab.
