UP: Teenage Dalit girl’s body found in paddy field, family suspect rape

Family found the half-naked body of their teenage daughter on Wednesday night in a paddy field where she had gone to work

UP

Uttar Pradesh’s Barabanki police found the tied and half-naked body of a teenage Dalit girl in the village paddy field, nearly 40 km from Lucknow on the night of October 14, 2020, said a Hindustan Times report.

According to Superintendent of Police R. S. Gautam an initial probe suggested that the girl was strangled by her own shirt and the police suspected murder. However, family members worried that her semi-naked condition suggested sexual assault before murder. All of this while, the country continues to rage against the rape and murder of the Dalit woman who suffered a similar fate in Hathras district of the same state.

Gautam said the girl was missing since Wednesday evening when she left home to cut paddy crops. Family members found her body in the field while searching for her on the same night. The incident occurred in Tipri village within Satrikh police station limits.

Police and the administration did not share the post-mortem report but sought the opinion of doctors, who carried out the post-mortem examination, regarding the possibility of rape.

Two suspects were arrested for murder and taken away for questioning. Meanwhile, a police team was stationed in the village to ensure peace, said Circle Officer Ram Surat Sonker.

According to the National Crime Records Bureau, 35 women were murdered after being raped or gang-raped in 2019.
