On Saturday, May 14, Biplab Kumar Deb submitted his resignation from the post of Tripura Chief Minister to Governor SN Arya. The shock resignation comes ahead of state polls next year. Deb, the first Bharatiya Janata Party Chief Minister of the state has reportedly quit to take on a bigger role in the party ahead of the 2023 elections to the 60-seat Tripura Assembly. His short letter was made public on social media.

Biplab Deb, has joined the list of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Chief Ministers of Uttarakhand, Karnataka and Gujarat who were told to quit ahead of Assembly polls in their states. Deb was in Delhi on Thursday and had met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP president JP Nadda.
According to a report in News18, “the Tripura unit of the BJP has been rife with rumours of infighting”. Biplab Deb is likely to be “accommodated in the organisation” soon added the report. Deb resigned just a day after meeting his party bosses in New Delhi. Deb had shared that the two had “in-depth deliberations regarding development works and organization” but did not hint at an instant resignation then.

According to news reports Deb told the media that the BJP wants him “to work to strengthen the organisation.” Some other news reports state that Biplab Deb’s resignation comes on the heels of “reports of infighting within the BJP’s state unit”. Meanwhile, the BJP has appointed its senior leaders Bhupender Yadav and Vinod Tawde, as observers for the election of the legislature party leader, stated news reports.
