Enough of state sponsored hatred; I have learnt to let go of my hate, so can you: Gurmehar Kaur

"Today I am a soldier (for peace) just like my dad".

Gurmehar Kaur does not speak. Her painstakingly hand-written placards — which she holds up before the camera, one by one — do. She was only two years old when her father, Captain Mandeep Singh, was martyred during the Kargil war.

When she was six years old she tried to stab a Muslim woman in a burqa because she hated Pakistan and Pakistanis who she believed were responsible for her father’s death. She also believed "all Muslims were Pakistanis". But her mother stopped her, helped her understand.

Having learnt to “let go of my hate”, Gurmehar believes that today she is a soldier “just like my dad”. She is now a soldier for peace. For an end to war that kills.
