Horrific video clips shared on social media, showing police persons dousing flames on a dazed and charred young woman, brought to light yet another exaample of the state of women in Uttar Pradesh. The young woman identified as Anjali Tiwari attempted self-immolation in Lucknow, right at the gates of Vidhan Sabha (UP State Assembly), on Tuesday.
Policemen on duty, and some others were seen trying to douse the flames, as the woman stood dazed. They covered her with blankets and towels and an ambulance siren can be heard approaching. According to a news report the woman has been admitted to a civil hospital in a critical condition, and police have begun investigations.

According to the report in Navbharat Times the incident occured in front of gate number 3 of the Assembly complex. Anjali Tiwari is said to be a resident of Maharajganj district, said senior police officials. She is said to have been upset that her partner Ashiq Raza had left for Saudi Arabia, added the police. While police are yet to share further details, speculations have begun. The right wing social media users have already tagged this with the infamous ‘love jihad’ label.
The Navbharat Times report states that the victim has revealed that she was married to one Akhilesh Tiwari of Maharajganj, but the couple later divorced. She was then in a relationship with Aashiq Raza, the police stated the couple stayed together. However NBT reported that the woman converted and married Raza, who then left for Saudi Arabia. The report added that the woman has alleged that her family members were constantly harassing her, and even though she had complained at the local police station no action was taken. Troubled, she reached the Assembly and attempted self-immolation on Tuesday.
