This is not the first time Madhu Kishwar who brands herself as a human rights activist, has posted something inflammatory specially against the Muslim community, her tweets range from disseminating hatred against minorities, be it Muslims or even Christians, endorsing her extreme Hindutva views and spreading fake news about her adversaries through her “verified” Twitter handle. Hers is a twitter handle followed by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself and hence she commands credibility amongst her 2.1 million followers on twitter.

Her tweets need no explanation or interpretation as they are outrightly radical and hateful on the face of it as well as endorsing Hindutva ideology

An organisation called Fight Against Hate has even filed a police complaint against the above tweet of Madhu Kishwar. Madhu Kishwar has been pulled up multiple times for even posting fake newsabout her adversaries like Rana Ayyub, Rahul Gandhi and such others. Since she has a verified account and has 2.1 million followers, her tweets have a wide reach and are easily validated.

The question that twitter gets asked time and again is why accounts of people who keep spreading hate and incite users against a community on the platform are not suspended by Twitter and still have the “verified” account tag. Specially accounts that have been in the news and known to spread fake news. Twitter has been coming under the scanner time and again in recent times for not acting against such hate mongers and many believe that Twitter benefits from such hate factories that it has let breed on its platform and hence refrains from taking any harsh measures against them.

Mumbai: A citizens group announced a nationwide protest against EVMs on May 30. Besides Azad Maidan in Mumbai and Jantar Mantar in Delhi, protests against EVMs are reportedly being held at Sardarbag in Ahmedabad, Subhash Fourway in Allahabad, Azad Maida in Panjim and Lohia Maidan in Margao, Goa, and more.

 
“The outcome of the recent Parliamentary elections has shocked the entire nation. We always believed that EVMs are hacked on a massive scale by the BJP and our belief is strongly substantiated by numbers now. The website of the Election Commission (EC) shows that the “votes counted” do not match with “votes polled”, in all the 48 constituencies in Maharashtra. It did not match in 203 assembly constituencies of Madhya Pradesh also. This is enough to prove that EVMs were manipulated and it is therefore very clear that the results cannot be believed in,” the citizen’s collective said.
 
“Many people from across the country are posting on social media, on the discrepancies in the votes in their constituencies. We have all witnessed the malfunctioning of EVMs and looked on bewildered at the suspicious movements of thousands of EVMs, which were even found in hotel rooms,” their letter said.
 
“Right from the first phase of polling, almost the entire media was reporting that the NDA is going to suffer a minimum loss of 140 seats. More than 50% population that is dependent on agriculture was extremely disappointed and angry with the Modi Govt due to the worsening agrarian crisis and rising rate of suicides. The issues of Demonetization which itself was the biggest organised scam ever, the extremely anarchic implementation of the GST, rising unemployment, the Rafale scam among many other issues, were supposed to be the key issues against the government. Where did it all the anger and discontent disappear?” they asked.
 
“Moreover why is there a complete “Sannata”, a “Silence” across the country, even after Modi returned to power by securing over 45% votes for the NDA??? Why aren’t the citizens jubiliant?? This shows that the people are stunned and in a state of utter disbelief. They too did not expect a victory for BJP – and that is why we call it the “EVM Sarkar”,” they said.
 
“We have all seen the biased approach of the Election Commission during the entire two-month long campaign. We are all aware that like all the of other instutions of our parliamentary democracy, the EC too has been subverted by Modi,” they said.
 
“Also very interestingly when the EC was asked to go ahead with the Ballot Papers, the excuse they gave was very weak and beyond ridiculous. The EC had given an extremely absurd reason on 19th January 2019. The EC stated, “We do not have sufficient time to go for the paper ballot”. For 60 years, the EC used to print ballot papers AFTER the scrutiny and withdrawal of nomination forms. The election was supposed to be held in April and May, but the EC said it did not have time to opt for ballot papers. Truly unbelievable, even by the low standards of the current EC,” they wrote.
 
“Amit Shah boasts of making BJP the biggest political party in the world with a membership of over 7 Crore active members. He talks about having 25 youth per booth and an incharge for every page of the voter list. But then, why is the biggest political party in the world scared of conducting elections by Ballot Paper?? The only answer is that BJP is capable of the mass manipulation of the EVMs, but not the masses. They know that they cannot win an election conducted under transparent, free and fair conditions,” they said.
 
“We thus Go to the Peoples Court! Thus, we have decided to go to the people. We will protest against this massive EVM hacking. We are sure that people will join the movement to end the use of EVMs in our electoral system and call for a return to the Paper Ballot System. It must also be emphatically stated that the overwhelming majority of the democratic nations of the world use Ballot Paper and have discarded the EVMs. Infact the EVMs pose a clear danger to our entire Electoral Parliamentary Constitutional Democracy and thus must be immediately discarded and done away with,” they said.
 
“Let the people come out and voice their opinion, anger, opposition, express their disbelief and a vote of no-confidence in the EVMs. The Supreme Court should find its spine and set aside these elections. Let there be free and fair elections by paper ballot and then only will the people reaffirm their faith in our democracy. We have thus called for a national day of protest on the 30th of May and appeal to all the citizens, social movements and political parties to come out and organise protests in all the cities, towns and villages across the country. EVM HATAO – DESH BACHAO! SAVE OUR DEMOCRACY – SAVE INDIA!” they said.

The Pakistan government Friday took over the administrative control of the headquarters of Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM), the militant outfit which claimed responsibility for the Pulwama suicide attack that killed 40 CRPF personnel in Jammu and Kashmir.

The move came a day after the UN Security Council comprising 15 nations, including Pakistan’s key ally China, named JeM in a statement condemning in the “strongest terms” the “heinous and cowardly attack perpetrated by Pakistan-based JeM” in Pulwama and stressed on the need to hold organisers and financiers of such “reprehensible acts” accountable and bring them to justice.

“The Punjab government has taken over the control of the JeM headquarters in Bahawalpur,” Pakistan’s information minister Fawad Chaudhry told PTI.

“The government of Punjab has taken over the control of a campus comprising Madressatul Sabir and Jama-e-Masjid Subhanallah in Bahawalpur and appointed an administrator to manage its affairs,” the minister added. Bahawalpur is 400 km from Lahore.

A statement issued by the interior ministry also said the crackdown on Jaish “has been taken in line with the decision of the National Security Committee meeting held on Thursday under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Imran Khan”.

The Islamic seminaries in the campus have a faculty of 70 teachers and currently 600 students were studying in it, the statement said, adding that Punjab police is providing security and protection to the campus.

Pakistan Thursday also banned Hafiz Saeed-led Jamat-ud-Dawa and its charity wing Falah-e-Insaniat Foundation. Earlier, the two outfits were kept on the watchlist of the interior ministry.

Meanwhile, Pakistan army chief has said that though Pakistan is a peace-loving country, it will not be intimidated and any misadventure will be given a befitting response.

General Qamar Bajwa made the remarks on his visit to the Line of Control on Friday, said a statement issued the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

“COAS visited Line of Control. Reviewed state of preparedness. Lauded high moral of troops. Pakistan is a peace loving country but we will not be intimidated or coerced. Any aggression or misadventure shall be paid back in same coin”, Bajwa said, according to DG ISPR major general Asif Ghafoor.

UNSC Condemns Pulwama Attack

The UN Security Council has strongly condemned what it called the “heinous and cowardly” militant attack in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir and underlined the need to hold perpetrators of these “reprehensible acts of terrorism accountable and bring them to justice”.
40 central reserve police force personnel were killed in a suicide attack in Pulwama district on February 14.

“The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the heinous and cowardly suicide bombing in Jammu and Kashmir, which left 40 Indian paramilitary forces dead and dozens wounded on February 14, 2019, for which Jaish-e-Mohammed has claimed responsibility,” the UNSC said in a statement.

The UN organ, which includes five permanent members China, France, Russia, UK and the US “underlined the need to hold perpetrators, organisers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism accountable and bring them to justice”, it said.
The top UN body urged all States, in accordance with their obligations under international law and relevant Security Council resolutions to cooperate actively with the government of India and all other relevant authorities.

The press statement is highly significant as China, a permanent member of the Council, has in the past repeatedly blocked India’s bids in the Security Council Sanctions Committee to designate JeM chief Masood Azhar as a “global terrorist”.

“A statement with many firsts takes more time than expected. In complex diplomatic situations, however, it is better to be late than never,” India’s permanent representative to the UN Syed Akbaruddin tweeted on the UNSC statement.

On whether China raised any objections to the statement, sources told PTI here that drafting the statement was a “prolonged process” and was issued after “prolonged discussions”.

The members of the Security Council also expressed their deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims, as well as to the Indian people and the government of India, and wished a speedy and full recovery to those who were injured.

“The members of the Security Council reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security,” it said.

The Council also reiterated that “any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed”.

The UNSC reaffirmed the “need for all States to combat by all means, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and other obligations under international law, threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts,” it said.

Nafees’ son , 27 year old Najeeb has been missing since October 2016 after an alleged assault by members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) at the Jawaharlal Nehru University(JNU) in Delhi. JNU is a university under attack for its radical and liberal values by the Modi regime since Feburary 2016. The ABVP is a wing of the far right Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the ideological fountainhead of the NDA II regime. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) finally closed the case in October 2018. Nafees is planning to challenge the closure in a protest petition soon. It is believed that top level functionaries of the Modi have been protecting the nine accused in the case. These nine have not ven been questioned by the CBI. The CBI itself is under a cloud after brazen interference in its functioning by the prime minister’s office (PMO).

“I dare the primine minister to meet us, look me in the eye and say no wrong was done to my son. This regime that is fuelled on hate and violence will not come back to power. The 56 inch chest will deflate,” Fatima said. Hailing from Badaun in Uttar Pradesh, Fatima spoke of the hardships involved in the struggle for justice, the delays, the callous attitudes of the law enforcement agencies amd even the courts.

Junaid, a 16 year old from Faridabad was literally beaten or lynched to death in June 2017 when on a Delhi Mathura train returning home with his two brothers after Eid shopping. While Junaid tragically died his brothers were seriously injured in the assault that was clearly communal, with vile abuse being flung at the boys and their beards being pulled. Junaid’s tragic death had resulted in a nationwide outrage of anger and protest. Sabrangindia had been the most prompt to report on this tragic death after the CPIM in a rare and prompt move had moved on the issue.   The #NotInMyName Protests after Junaid’s killing had showed some resistance to the repeated violence against minorities that has been a hallmark of this regime.

The dimunitive Shahira, mother of Junaid who also spoke in Mumbai yesterday was scathing of the state of affairs related to the case in her son’s mother. ” The FIR itself has not included the crucial sections of section 302 and 307 (murder and attempt to murder), she said. Six of the accused have been let off by the courts on bail. There is talk of the main accused standing for the coming elections. We need to speak out. There should be no question of feeling afraid. My son’s death has killed the fear in me,” she said.

A Noida based businessman, Amit Jani has floated an outfit called the Uttar Pradesh Navnirmal Sena and has announced that Naresh Kumar, the main accused in the killing of Junaid will contest the elections. He has also reportedly stated that all those accused of killing Muslims should fight the elections.

Both Shahira and Fatima stressed the need of educating Muslim, Dalit and Bahujan youth so that young persons make it to top positions and ensure both representation and justice for the marginalised. “I was not educated and my husband is a carpenter. But apart from Najeeb my other sons too are post graduates and my daughter, too is studying,” she said.

Fahad Ahmad from TISS also spoke on the occasion. Teesta Setalvad, co editor of Sabrangindia and secretary, Citizens for Justice and Peace, spoke of the emergent opposition to this repressive regime. ” It is the youth like Rohith Vemula, Umar Khalid, Kanhaiya Kumat and survivors like Shahira and Fatima Nafees who have emerged as the strong voice of resistance and opposition to this regime,” she said.

Mumbai: The Bombay High Court refused to grant interim relief to Bhim Army on Monday to hold their public meeting scheduled in Pune. They had filed a petitioned in court after Pune Police denied it permission to hold a public meeting. The court will hear the matter on January 4.
 
The plea has also sought a compensation of Rs. 10 crore for “illegal detainment” of Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad and other Dalit activists by the Mumbai Police on Saturday. In the petition filed Sunday through lawyer Nitin Satpute, Datta Pol, Pune unit chief of Bhim Army, urged the court to restrain the state from taking any action against him or the Bhim Army.
 
However, the Pune Police informed the high court that it was the Pune University which rejected permission to allow a rally by Azad on its grounds. It also said the Bhim Army chief is neither arrested nor placed under house arrest.
 
On Sunday, the ‘Bhima Koregaon Sangharsh Mahasabha’, a rally planned by the Bhim Army, was cancelled on the grounds of absence of relevant clearances.
 
After he arrived in Pune yesterday, Azad had held a press conference during which he had said that the police had not given the outfit permission, despite asking for it in advance.
 
During the press conference, he had replied in the affirmative when asked if he would visit Jaystambh in Perne village, about 30 km northeast of Pune, on January 1, the anniversary of the Battle of Bhima Koregaon.
 
“Despite asking for it well in advance, police have not given us the permission (to hold the event). But we have approached the High Court. The hearing is scheduled on Monday. If we do not get permission (from the court), I will meet the supporters of Bhim Army in Pune, which is my right. Police are violating the Article 19 of the Indian Constitution by denying us permission,” Azad had said.
 
Bhim Army had planned Azad’s interaction with students and youths at the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) on December 31. But there was no permission from SPPU for the event. With the support of few student organisations, Bhim Army organised Azad’s interaction with students at the university’s Aniket canteen.
 
He is scheduled to visit Bhima Koregaon on January 1. He will visit Nagpur on January 2 and go to Amravati on January 4, according to Bhim Army volunteers.

Guwahati: In yet another case of moral policing that reveals the impunity of the ‘mob’, a mob waylaid an unmarried couple going on a motorcycle and assaulted them for travelling together, police said on Friday. Again, the seat of the tragedy was Assam. The incident went viral on social media following which two people have been arrested.

The mob waylaid the couple in their 20s and assaulted them at Pukhurpur village in Rongjuli area on June 19. The brother of the man who was attacked has claimed that villagers later held a meeting and forced the two to get married.

Assam Director General of Police Kuladhar Saikia said that as no case was filed, the police registered a case and investigations were on. While one person was arrested on Thursday, another person was picked up Friday morning, police said.

They were booked under various IPC sections including 342 (wrongful confinement), 325 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt) and 354b (assault or use of criminal force to woman with intent to disrobe).

The body of 45 year old Tauhid Ansari was discovered at noon on June 19, 2018. Soon a video of it went viral. According to police officers from the Rajrappa police station under whose jurisdiction the incident occurred, Ansari’s bike met with an accident at around 9 am and that impact caused some meat to fall out of the bike’s back compartment. Three hours later, Tauhid’s body was recovered from a spot at short distance from the accident spot.

Naushad Alam, Tauhid’s younger brother and an advocate in the Ramgarh Civil Court recalls, “Tauhid left our village Karma for Chitarpur at about 5 in the morning for some work. I was in court and found out about his death only after I saw the video of his body being discovered. I recognised his red shirt.” Naushad who is also a BJP party worker also clarifies that the bike discovered at the accident spot was indeed Tauhid’s despite contradictory media reports. “The bike bearing the registration number JH02-H-5722 belonged to Tauhid. It had been purchased based on an agreement from the previous owner,” he says.

There was a three hour interval between the occurrence of the accident and the discovery of Tauhid’s body. Naushad suspects there was foul play involved. “My fear is that he was not killed in the accident or anywhere near the accident site. I believe he was taken elsewhere where he was killed and his body was later dumped where it was found,” he says. The vehicle that collided with Tauhid’s bike has not been found yet. Naushad fears that the accident may have been orchestrated and the beef angle may have been added to first frame and then murder Tauhid. However, he does not know anyone who would want to do so and insists it couldn’t have been a case of enmity. “He did not have any enemies. I have fought so many cases pro bono for the poor. So it’s not like I have any enemies either,” he says.

However, Naushad fears for the safety of his family. On being asked if they have been threatened he says he cannot speak freely at the moment, but insists, “The family should be given protection. The police should provide us protection.” On the matter of ‘beef’ falling out of the motorbike’s back compartment he says, “Let the scientific tests reveal if the meat was beef.” The police have sent the meat for forensic analysis and the body was sent for a post mortem analysis. Both reports are still awaited.

Tauhid’s father who had earlier filed the police complaint is now ill and Tauhid’s widow, according to Naushad, appears to have suffered a mental breakdown. Naushad is following all developments in the case in a bid to reach the bottom of the matter. Tauhid did odd jobs and is survived by two daughters and a son. Meanwhile, Tauhid’s body has been returned and his last rights will be performed soon.
