Sunil Yadav, a 32 year old daily wage labourer was brutally lynched in Koderma district on Friday evening by a mob that accused him of being a child lifter. Yadav died of his injuries the following day.

Mob Lynching

According to his brother Dilip Yadav’s statement to the police, Sunil would travel from Hazaribagh to Koderma every day looking for work. Sunil was allegedly locked up in a room and brutally beaten by a mob that accused him of kidnapping children. Afterwards he was left to die by the side of the road. However, he somehow managed to reach a private clinic and call his brother and narrate the incident.

That’s when Dilip rushed to Koderma and shifted Sunil to Sadar Hospital, where Sunil breathed his last on Saturday. According to Dilip, the incident took place in Railway Colony on Friday evening and he has accused three railway officials of being the assailants. Yadav’s anguished family held a sit in protest on the Ranchi-Patna highway near Koderma Sadar Hospital. The protest lasted over an hour and ended only after the police and  local legislator Janki Yadav promised action against the culprits.

Koderma sub divisional police officer Rajendra Prasad discarded child lifting rumours, but said Yadav had been accused of committing theft. He said, “It is true that the victim [Sunil Yadav] was beaten up by residents of a [Koderma] locality after he was caught red-handed committing a theft.’’ He added that police have filed a case on the complaint lodged by Dilip Yadav. “Investigation has already commenced. We are waiting for the postmortem report,” said Prasad.

The National Register of Citizens (NRC) authority has issued a statement rubbishing rumours that a Rohingya migrant had been included in the NRC. On July 22, 2019, various publications had reported that a man named Alam Hussain Mazumdar who was arrested in Cachar on various charges was an illegal Rohingya migrant and that his name had been included in the draft NRC.

However, the NRC authorities have clarified that his name was never included as he failed the verification procedures. The statement published on the official Twitter account of the NRC authority said, “… it is clarified that the news is absolutely false as the said Alam Hussain Mazumdar was not included in Draft NRC on account of being found ineligible in family tree verification and for submitting forged birth certificate.”

The NRC authorities fear these unverified accounts only serve to discredit the NRC. It is noteworthy, that the insider vs outsider debate in Assam originally began as an ethnic divide born out of fears of a change in the state’s demography. Gradually vested interests and political players added a communal colour. Now the fear of prospect of infiltrators and illegal migrants entering the state is being thrown into this mix, making it a potent cocktail of fear, suspicion and even hate.

ADGP holds meeting in view of East Singhbhum lynching incident

The Additional Director General of Police R K Mallick on Friday held a meeting with senior police officials of East Singhbhum district in view of the lynching of seven persons in the district on Thursday. With rumours raging across parts of Jharkhand about child kidnappers on the prowl, seven people were lynched in separate incidents on Thursday while at least six have had a narrow escape in the past 10 days. PTI reports that ADGP (Operations) R K Mallick, Inspector General (STF) R K Dhan and DIG (Kolhan) Prabhat Kumar held a meeting with the Deputy Commissioner of East Singhbhum district Amit Kumar and other senior officials to review the situation.  The question of who or which organisation is responsible for spreading such panic and rumours so far remains unanswered.

The high level meeting of the Jharkand police was held after seven persons were lynched by villagers on suspicion of being child lifters at Nagadih under Bagbera police station area yesterday night, an official release here said. The deputy commissioner said miscreants were spreading rumours about child lifting through the social media for the last few days.
Kumar said the administration was keeping a vigil on the mischief mongers and assured stringent action against them.

He said no complaints were registered with the police regarding child lifting and directed the officials to spread awareness among people. He also asked people to ignore such canard and maintain peace. The deputy commissioner also directed all block development officers and circle officers to be present at rural pockets and keep vigil on mischief mongers.

He asked all the officials to convene gram sabhas in order to make village chiefs aware of the problem and convince villagers to inform the police whenever they detect any suspicious activities. Apart from Nagadih incident here, four persons were lynched for similar reasons in Shobhapur and Sosomouli village under Rajnagar police station area in adjoining Seraikela-Kharswan district on Thursday last.
